Hey guys,

I am off to the beach tonight to try my hand at these long exposure shots I have seem about. I was to aim for something similar to this: https://photography-on-the.net …hp?p=4856330&postcount=95 (The second picture)

Need some advice on what Manual settings I need to use - guessing about 25-30 second exposure, but being new to all this not really too sure on what other settings I should be using?

many thanks :)

Adam

It probably depends on the exact lighting you've got. You could always set your camera to TV mode at 30 seconds and see what it says, but it's likely to crank open your aperture.

It might be a good starting point though, as you can note the settings and switch back to manual, stop down a bit and increase your iso.

I usually just set the aperture I want and then meter off some midrange part of the scene adjusting the shutter speed from there. Chimping helps too ;)

Looking forward to seeing the shots!

okay I didn't really understand a lot of that lol - I have only been out a couple of times with my camera on manual really - what ISO would you recommend. I don't think there will be any moonlight tonight either, I should really heck that out too.

As low an ISO as possible. Perhaps even an ND.

I AM HOPELESS with these dates. I was told not to miss this airshow, and had no idea it was on so soon in summer! I would love to go myself... But may not be possible.
Might not be home Friday night, hungover at a friends place by Saturday morning.

And Sunday is the meet obviously

It's all about getting the best compromise between settings - for sharpness, noise etc.

You'd want ISo 50/100 - whatever the cameras lowest is.
Try putting the aperture to the smallest setting - usually F22-F32 depending on lens, and make sure you have a clean sensor, as dust spots become very apparent at that setting. And adjust the shutter speed to suit. (I'm a full time manual user)
If it's really dark, such an aperture may not be needed, in which case I'd aim for the sweet spot of a lens - around F8 to F11 and adjust the shutter speed again to suit

Okay stupid question and please don't shoot me down, but how do I manually adjust the aperture?

Set the on switch to the furthest position, then use the main control wheel and quick control dial for aperture and shutter speed.

That guy definately used a strong ND filter to get a 30sec exposure in that light.

My standard settings are Tripod, Mirror lockup (if you have it), remote release or self timer, ISO 50 or 100, Aperture priority (usually at least f/16) and adjusting to get the desired shutter speed. Neutral Density filter if I want a slower shutter.

On another note, don't just try for the longest shutter speed you can attain, excellent results can be had from pretty fast speeds to; maybe 3,4,5 up to 15 and 20 seconds. For me, I like speeds around 6 to 10 seconds. Sometimes 25-30 can look a bit too dreamy if you understand what I mean;)

Talking of ND grads - I'm thinking of selling off my set of Lee hard edge ND grads (I have a set of soft edge ones that I use more often). If these are of interest to anyone make me an offer. I also have a Lee filter bellows for sale.

AdamAsh - I would say set your camera to AV mode (Aperture priority), wack up the aperture to f16 or higher and shoot away. If you have any polorisers, stick them on the lens if you don't think you are getting a slow enough shutter speed.

Just a note for those of you meeting up on Sunday: I think I read that you were going to Greenwich at some point. If so, you might like to know that parts of the park have been turned into a film set, so you might want to avoid it. It looks as if they're also using part of the old Royal Naval College, too. Here's what the notice in the park says:

"Between Tuesday 27th May and Tuesday 10th June 2008, Wolf Man Productions will be working in certain areas of Greenwich Park. We are preparing and filming a set on location for a new film called 'The Wolfman' due for release in 2009.
We are working mainly in Great Cross Avenue and areas of the Flower Garden. This will involve transforming parts of these areas into a park fitting with the Victorian era, using set dressing, greeneray and lighting.
Once filming is complete, all the equipment will leave any set drressing renewed, and the areas cleaned up.
All areas of the park will remain accessible, but public may be asked momentarily to bear with us whilst some of the equipment is moved and positioned."

Of course, any celeb stalkers among you might care to note that Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt, and Hugo Weaving are starring in the movie. :)
