But for reference the above collection of terrorist targets were taken where the arrow points on this map (external link). That is where the riverside path (not shown) leading from the Woolwich Ferry Pier ends. At that point you have to make you way through the somewhat windy estate to the main road, then cut through the Thames Barrier car park to rejoin the river on the west side of the Barrier.

It is also directly opposite the Tate & Lyle refinery, and with a long enough lens a good-ish place to spot planes taking off and landing from London City Airport that is behind it. Although there will probably not be be many of those on a Sunday evening.

You can either catch the train to Maze Hill station (on the map) or bus routes 177 and 180 towards Thamesmead run along the main road from Greenwich. Or you could get off either the train or bus at Charlton if you want to approach the barrier from the west.

Michael.

The main reasons I was thinking of using the DLR to get to the barrier from the north side was because there is the Thames Barrier Park as well. Also, a short walk to the north brings you to the Royal Victoria Dock which seems to have potential. There's also the old Millennium Mills building, although I'm not sure what kind of access you can get to it.

I guess either plan would work out pretty well though and I'm happy to go along with whatever the majority want to do.

No sense and unfortunately not enough money.

I'm really sorry not to be able to meet up with you Didier.

I'll be in London until Tuesday evening. So let me know if you suddenly have some time (you've got my mobile phone number)...

That will teach me to keep quiet in future!

Actually I have just remembered, one of those stop and no-searches was actually while shooting the Barrier. I was hanging around a bit on the Woolwich side hoping to catch it with a nice dusky sky. Unfortunately when I got home I discovered for some reason most of my shots were out of focus. No idea why. A few were okay though.

Anyway, at the moment I am still not certain about Sunday, and will probably not know until if I can make it until the day itself. Although being the shy quiet type who hangs around on his own at the back of the pack no one will notice anyway!

The photos look great. Great time to take them none the less.

David Hogster - Good morning - Looking at your vibration problem - and you have obviously thought of it - could you make a simple anti vibration mount to suspend the camera from by mounting it between strong elastic bands similar to how a marine barograph was suspended to reduce the ships engine vibration.

Hi Ray,

The problem is the helicopter shouldn't be vibrating so much in the first place - once I get that tracked down it should be better :)

I managed to get more clear shots yesterday :)

The camera is already supported on a tray which is mounted on vibration isolation mounts :)

Cheers,

David :)

PS. Nice shots mij! :)

Awesome shots Michael! I've never been that far east along the thames, so I'm looking forward to it :)

I'm sitting around at home today waiting for the Sky installer to come around (he'll be here between 1 and 6, allegedly), so I figured I'd sort out my kit for the weekend as it'll be a busy one. It had been a while, so I thought I'd check out how clean my sensor was.

1. Yea, not so clean

IMAGE: http://www.kevinleitch.com/images/potn/cleaning-1.jpg

Step one was to let the built in sensor cleaner run and see what that did.

2. Not much
IMAGE: http://www.kevinleitch.com/images/potn/cleaning-2.jpg

Right, time to get out the rocket blower and give it a good few blasts.

3. Yes, I was holding the camera upside down...
IMAGE: http://www.kevinleitch.com/images/potn/cleaning-3.jpg

Ugg. Ok, time to crack out the wet cleaner and give it a go.

4. Pass number one
IMAGE: http://www.kevinleitch.com/images/potn/cleaning-4.jpg

Well, that's a bit of an improvement but I still wasn't happy so...

5. Pass two with the wet cleaning
IMAGE: http://www.kevinleitch.com/images/potn/cleaning-5.jpg

So, not perfect but close enough and I hardly every shoot at f22 anyways so odds are pretty good I won't see any dust this weekend :)

:D Well, Kerso came through for me! The 35L arrived today, but unfortunately I'm stuck at work until 7 tonight so I have to wait a few more hours until I can have a play around with it. Damn, I hate work sometimes.

I'm sure you can borrow a 600mm from somewhere. Then you can take the shot from the other side of the river. :p
