I'm pretty pleased after looking ahead on the calender that I'll be off work for the RIAT (external link) show. I am so going to that! F-22 Raptor here I come, just need to secure a good lens for it! I'm getting the open ticket so I can pick the day with the best weather.

RIAT and all this talk of Biggin Hill has just made me think of I need to cover a long range.

Im stuck now between the 70-200 f4L or going wider and getting the 12-24. If only I could get both. :(

I'm deciding what to do for the telephoto aspect when I go to RIAT, I don't want to be cropping too much, so I might look into hiring a 500L for the event.

That won't cover your need for long range mate :p

Seriously though, which do you find yourself saying 'I wish I had a ––– lens' (wide angle / long zoom etc) more often? Buy the one you find yourself needing most and hire the other until you're able to afford it :)

Getting my 70-200 F4 IS* before my 10-22 was the right way round to do it for me :)

Cheers,

David

Well David, I made my choice and just picked up the Sigma 12-24 and now on my way into London.

As much as I say I would like a telephoto for such events like Biggin Hill or motor sports, I just cant see myself using as much as I hope so for now, the UWA takes priority. Maybe in the next few months I can think about a 70-200 2.8L non IS and a 1.4x tele conv.

Now to go put my new toy into practice.

I would not buy a 70-200 f2.8 with out IS, save a bit more and get the one with IS, especially for motor sports it makes panning a lot more doable.
it is a great all round lens as well.

As for Biggin Hill, just too lazy to go, but I would have thought the best lens for that all round to get candids as well 100-400L on a day like today weather wise. I would have prob only used that lens all day

Exactly what I said to myself. My 70-200 is the first lens I've had with any kind of stabilisation and it amazes me with what I can get away with. Buying it through Kerso saved me a packet too £875:cool: non-IS in Warehouse Express is £929

100% well worth the extra money, IMO.

Hi all, to you that are local (Essex....if we are allowed...hehe) im a newbie on here and just finding my way around this site, I brought a 400d just a little over a week ago, got the twin lens deal and an extra lens, been mad buying bit and pieces so it is kept 100%, sakety filters, tamtac phot bag with room to grow into, gorilla tripod and a normal and all that so spent loads and loads ...sweating it ....lol, got a few piccys already, but still finding my way around my 400d, been trying to get a copy of Blue Crane Canon 400D Digital SLR Camera Training DVD, but cannot seem to find one at the moment apart from amazon and there £28 including postage.....cannot afford it at the moment so will have to wait, but anyways i am on essex coast, and want to get to meet other members in the area locally and get chatting and learning again as i have never had a dslr or even a slr so it is all really new to me....so hopefully i will learn loads from this site and make some friends locally along the way. well love and light to you all bumbleboo x :)

Yep, welcome along bumbleboo.

Learning loads from the forums shouldn't be a problem. Everyone is very helpful and a quick search will usually answer most questions (although you might want to keep away from the sample image thread in the lens section unless you have good self restraint :) )

Welcome bumbleboo, Essex is fine!

I got back from watching the Foo Fighters at Wembley this morning  the weather there was blue sky and sunshine. Drove back into grey cloudy drizzle. Oh the misery!!

However, just as I got home the postie arrived with my ebay orders - Cokin ND8 grad, ND8, close up +4, wideangle holder, normal holder and mounts for my 30mm, 10-20mm & 24-70mm lenses. Shame the weather's rubbish or I'd have been out playing! Still can't quite believe the speed with which they arrived! Perfect for Provence although gthe weather there's pretty naff too! The wideangle holder didn't show much if any vignette when I put it on the 10-20mm lens for a quick try so that's promising but I'll have to give it a better test in the week.

Hope you all have a good day tomorrow - the weather should be ok i think. I would have joined you but couldn't justify 2 trips to London in 1 weekend! I look forward to seeing the shots.

Welcome bumbleboo. This wil make a nice place to call "home". :)

Micchael, nice to hear your stuff arrived quickly. I ended up splashing out on the Sigma 12-24 and it is just too dreamy. About 45mins away from home now on the train so will post up some results.

I headed to Brick Lane to 1001 and 93ft East since a few friends were DJ'ing for the day. Some nice uber wide pics taken today. All in all, love it. Will need a Cokin Z system for it though :(

Heres a quick sample

Why a Z system? Has it got a wide filter thread? I suppose it is rather wide! I loved using my wigma when I got it and it mostly stays on my 20D.

Having filters will help me get more use out of my tripod too and get me thinking about composition a bit more.
