Wow that's insane. I've heard about it before, but thought it was like 1 in a million.

My own laptop - Acer Aspire 5920G gets crazy hot too. Like now. It's been converting RAWs, stitching panos, and opening 30Mb+ files in photoshop. About to give it a break ;)

Bloody hell - Are the rechargeable Lithium ion batteries in our cameras safe? I seem to remember having read reports somewhere about them burning up in the camera. No mention of it in the forum that I can see though.
I am using the cheaper variety from fairly trusted sites and they seem ok - but . . . . . . . Perhaps laptops shouldn't be allowed on aircraft?

Well this is the thing, with all this safety about aerosols and cans not allowed on planes, I would have honestly thought the same would have applied for a laptop. I mean when I went to Germany, they asked to scan the laptop via the x-ray machine but the battery could still be used to make some sort of device.

Now it has made me think twice about havin a laptop but I suppose it should not put me in the fear of using battery operated equiptment.

There was something in the news a while back about airlines in the US not allowing batteries in carry on luggage.... unless it was in a plastic bag :D

Sorry to steal the spotlight but I just rushed home due to the exploding Vaio issue. Not a good sight to see. Little sister seems to be ok but im not a happy bunny since I know that Vaio are a bunch of a**holes to deal with.

Woah, that's bad!! I've heard a few reports of stuff like this, but this is too close..

I gave my mother my old Viao - I just hope she's safe from this.

Was there not a recall from Sony? I know most companies who discovered a batch of duff batteries initiated a recall. As for losing faith in Sony if they didn't do a recall then definitely, if there was a recall and the battery not changed then they are no worse than any other manufacturer as they've all been hit by this at some point.

Good to know no-one was hurt.

@ Pete

Just check the website to make sure you battery is not affected. If it is or you are worried, get in touch with them on 0800 358 4753.

I will hopefully get a call about this to see what is said or done about it. Hopefully have more info on this by the evening.

Thanks Mitesh. The laptop I gave my mother was a VGN-FS31S

Or something like that. Anyhow, none of the affected model numbers looked familiar to me.

I hope she brings it with her this weekend, I need to calibrate her screen for her.
