Im normally up at 6am for work. I tend to drive past Richmond Hill about 8ish and about Oct/Nov time, the sunrises are stunning. I kept kicking myself for not stopping in those areas.

I dont mind what the conditions are like now, Ill still enjoy shooting. :)

I've been at work for 7 hours by that time, I miss the sunrise every time :(

No time off for weekends/shift patterns? I would assume either way, you would be catching up on sleep?

Nope, I always work Fri 00:00 until 09:00 Monday morning. Its exhausting, but I do get the whole week off to do what I want when everyone else is at work. :)

Although my wife works the same hours so we do get the whole week together, which is a huge bonus! :D :D :D

How comes you're up at this hour? Late night?

Not a bad thing. Well I was watching Robocop till I decided the lounge was too cold so I came upstairs and decided to charge up some batteries for my flash and now just dossing about for a bit, not even sure why.

I could take some photos but not in the mood. Having a look at where Primose Hill is. Looks like a good vantage point but knowing my luck, its just a patch of grass.

Knowing my luck, ill head off after this post, fire up the Wii, play Metroid for five minutes, switch it off. Instead of sleep, I would end up switching on the PS2, playing a races on Gran Turismo 3 and then fall asleep with the controller and waking up to find its 1pm and I missed sunrise by a longshot.

I will have to experiment with macro a bit more if thats the case. Sunday, I will be heading into London either way. I might just try some London Underground photography.

As long as you don't miss some of the few hours of daylight we have at this time of year, you'll be doing better than me. Have fun tomorrow! :D

Question for people - which would you say is the better airshow... the one at Farnborough or the Fairford one. If people are interested, it might even be worth organising an airshow meet for the summer.

Not sure which is better - I've only been to Biggin Hill which was pretty spectacular compared to what I'm used to. Was acutely aware that I needed a longer lens than my 200mm on a 20D as it just wasnt long enough. And now with a 1D2... will probably rent a 400DO for the weekend if I can get it past the minister of finance (the wife).

What date is it on this year as I'm in the Pyrenees late July which is usually airshow time.

*giggles* Im going to be heading into the centre today. I want to get a pair of Vans from Canarby Street and then, I might head down to Canary Wharf or Embankment to see what I can find.

If anyone feels they want to join me, I should be there from 1pm till about 4/5pm if I can be bothered. Tel number is on my site or on my profile under skype.

Edit : Might also go visit Southbank skate park. See how busy it is today. Get some b&w shots in :)

Fairford is definitely better than Farnborough, its really the main airshow of the year. Farnborough has really died off in recent years and is more commercial nowadays, although Fairford ain't cheap, last year was about £35 ahead and 2 hour queues to get in, very big event. Biggin Hill was excellent last year, my first year, I'll be back this year. Shoreham's a good show, from friends and Wazza images Eastbourne Airshow is also worth a montion and if your into real aircraft....props then check out the shuttleworth collection flying display's, well worth the £20 entrance and a great display.

If you want the ultimate airshow then, it has to be AXALP

Pete & Dr D

I went to quite a few air shows last year.

1) Biggin Hill had the biggest explosion I had ever seen (see photo). Getting to it and finding a place to stay was easy. Being local I knew all the back roads so getting to it and getting in was easiest. The light on the planes was fine. The grandstand was on the fence line, so if you wish, this is the best grandstand to stay on.

2) Lydd had the best light. (see photo). It was a good show. Easy to get into. not too crowded.

3) Fairford. Not two hours wait to get in, rather 3 hours as in my case! I had prebooked a seat on he Grandstand, thinking it was like the one at Biggin Hill. It was some 80m from the fence line. Terrible. I only stayed a few hours as I developed a headache. I watched a Stealth bomber fly over me - from my car seat. I think if I go again, I will stay over the night before. Very crowded.

4) Little Gransden was the cutest air show. Just a grass field and planes with propellers. Lots of hedge hoping , like a steeplechase. There was a crazy flying circus doing daft stunts. Surprisingly good show.

5) Eastbourne, and discovered that Wazza took a photo of me at the end of the pier, , I did not feel the light was the best. Too many silhouettes etc. Maybe, it was better at the right of shoreline, where Wazza was.

6) Shuttlewoth collection. I did not go here for the airshow. I visited the museum at the end of 2007 and was blown away by the care and attention that is spent on these planes. There is not a speck of dust on any of these planes. I expect to see the airshow later in the year.

Mstar....I have to agree with you....for the money, Biggin Hill was probably the best show, followed closely by shuttleworth, shoreham and Lydd (although 300 mile round trip for me), Fairford is a good show, but the hassle of getting in and cost is making me want to avoid going, instead, I'll probably meeting up with friends who stay at a farm near the bottom of the runaway and camp for the whole weekend.

Like most events in this country, we are dogged by the weather.

Quite a few of the shows have problems with the late afternoon sun, making photography abit hit or miss.....but compared to the rest of the world, the airshows in this country are still the best, just pray for the weather

Don't forget Dunsfold wings and wheels day. Like most air shows, it can be a bit of a pain getting in and out.

It's near Guildford, where they film Top Gear.
