Hi all,

I've been to Richmond quite a few times. Although dawn would be fantastic, it can be a bit of a mission finding the deer (they tend to go about in groups). I normally take my bike so it only takes half an hour or so to scout about. A dusk shoot might be a bit easier because at least we can track the deer before hand and just wait around for the right light. Last time I went, I had about an hours worth of good backlighting.

Lenswise you can get very close to them so you don't need anything too long. I shot with a combination of 300 and the 70-200, I didn't really my converters at all.

We could easily to Richmond park and something else - like a normally drive though Richmond park to get to Kew or the Wetlands. I would have suggested the butterfly house but thats closed down.

I'm also only 10 miuntes away from Richmond, I'm thinking about spending a few evenings up there to get a feel for the place. I've only ever been there during a normal busy afternoon.

I can see where you are coming from Peter, and for an upgrade every 18 months it is generally welcome, and as for a war between the 2, sure good for technology, bad for consumer, if there was a little upgrade over the 40D to the 50D, it would not bother me or anyone, but have you read the specs, it is a completely new camera, there is no comparison between the 2 for less money.

I would never buy a !D MK3 DS now, as technically looking at the jump on the 50D, the 5D MK 2 will be as good as a 1DS MK3, bar a few MP's and a 1 series body construction, they are aiming the new 5D to be better than a D3 by a fair bit, and I bit it will be

I think the 50D looks like great value for money. The only area (from the specs) where it is weaker than the D300, is its AF, but given the price difference, it would be churlish to complain! I'm very excited to see how it performs!

Well according to one review it focuses faster than 1D MK3 is that slower than a D300??

looking at that press release it does seem that Canon are going for a line up of a high and low spec model of each type (1000D & 450D too remember) and the 40D will live on till may prob and the 45D will replace it im thinking

Good for me, by the time i want to upgrade the 50D will be cheaper and the Dig!c IV would have been perfected

I might add £200-00 saving over UK, and you certainly know how to use it David :)

To be honest, I did not really see anything about the 100-400L that made me want one. The IQ from the Sigma 120-300 just seemed far better throughout the range. At 100-200mm or so, that Canon was great but at the longer end, the IQ did not seem as great. I guess I would need to do some more side by side comparisons.

Oh god  My wallet haaaaaaaates you Brett!!! It's bouncing around in my pocket like mad trying to escape! :p Foolish really as I know all my card details off by heart anyway ;)

Hmmm I would prefer to get it from Kerso myself:

Not too much dearer and based in the UK :)

Who knows .... maybe I can treat myself to one when I start working full-time in October!

David :)

Edit: Mitesh - I don't think I could justify the enormous extra cost and weight of the Sigma - I'm very pleased with the performance of the 100-400 myself :) FWIW that shot above was wide-open at 400mm at F5.6

Like Brett and I discussed, I would rather save the money and go for what I wanted even if it is a big save than buying a lens for temp use. I know the 100-400 is capable but I feel I might buy one then give it up shortly after. You seem to have got the hang of it though. :)
