why does the 40D come with a 28-135mm instead of 18-55mm?

so for this Christmas my family has decided to finally replace my dad's old film Canon SLR with a digital SLR.

my question is why are most of the combo-deals I find with the 40D include the 28-135mm lens? i dont think that 28mm is ever wide enough on a camera with a 1.6 crop factor. most websites i go to have a deal with the 40D and the 28-135mm lens for around $1,500.

I think we are probably going to get him the 40D with the 17-85mm IS USM lens for around $1,800.....but i can't figure out why canon would ever market the 40D with a 28-135mm lens...it just doesnt seem to make sense!!

I was thinking the same thing. The kit lens has been the 18-55, but now all 40D's are being sold as a kit with the 28-135. I would have thought that the new 18-55 IS would be the kit.

Because sometimes Canon is brain dead. It is obviously too long of a lens for a 1.6 crop camera. It's also a dinosaur. They should have made it a kit with the new 18-55 lens or the older 17-85 IS lens.

The 28-135 is an excellent walkaround lens, there is only one other even better walkaround lens out there. I suggest you get the 40D kit and then find a kit lens for around $60-70 here on POTN or on FM, they go up almost daily. If you look at the deals and coupons, you may be able to get the 40D kit for around $1400 as well.

It was to get a kit lens with IS. There are also 17-85 kits. Its to combat the 'no body IS' comment from prospective buyers Id almost bet. I wouldn't be surprised if that changes to the new 18-55 IS very soon.

I suspect the 28-135 is not selling well, so this is being used as a way to shift their stock. Or maybe I'm just cynical

the local Sammy's Camera here sells several box sets of a 40D with an extra Canon battery and Canon camera bag and the 17-85mm IS USM lens. they also once had 30D box sets with the same lens. it seems to be an anniversary edition or something. there is also a 5D box set with the 24-105 IS USM, extra battery and camera bag, all in a big Canon box.

I also think that's the reason, and it's not just cynicism. It's really too long a walk-around lens for the crop cameras. The 1D/5D owners with full frame are more likely to be buying the 24-70L or 24-105Ls. And the full frame film shooters have all died off... (not literally, of course. )

I had replaced the kit lens form my Digital Rebel with a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8
It,s an awesome lens for 449.

When I got my 40D, I bought the body only.

Why not the 70-200 f/2.8 since you have a f/4. then you can swap when needed.
