I like just about everything you guys have listed sans the specific references to titles involving concerto/ #'s and difficult to pronounce names (Not that I don't like the fancy stuff, I just don't know a thing about it other than it pleases the mind & soul).

Lately I've dug up an old mixed tape of Tesla Mechanical Resonance/Five Man Accoustal Jam. Glad I didn't replace the tape deck in my honda just yet. Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen, Great White, White Lion and a few others have been getting play lately.

I'm partial to anything by Rich Mullins, Phil Driscoll and Phil Keaggy.

I have difficulty making compilation CD's of favorite music because I like so much and have a hard time narrowing it down.

Could you explain "Ray Manzarek: Carmina Burana" for me?

I love the music by Orf.. I have a few different recordings.. my favorite though is by Boston SO conducted by Seiji Ozawa with piano by John Adams ... a dear old friend of mine.

I can't seem to find anything on this peice of music and The Doors? I'd be very curious.

Also.. if Peter Gabriel's 4th album is one of your all time favs... you need to stop calling it "security" :P

CDS:
Ok, Ray issued the Camina Burana but I don't think it sold near as many as it deserved. In the liner notes, Ray says he's always loved the music, and wanted to record it. It's not issued under Doors, but under Ray Manzarek. Here are a link or two:
http://www.thedoors.com/band/ray/?fa=carmina (external link)
http://www.raymanzarek.com/burana_album.html (external link)

I do hope you can track down a copy. While Ray arranged the pieces to encompass the rock and roll world, his use of old world musical instruments, keep it grounded in the old. The lyrics are not updated to english, but presented correctly.

After listening to the rock version of Carmina Burana, I purchased one or more classical versions, and borrowed many from various libraries over the years. I never really enjoyed them as much as Rays version. I will check into the Boston version. Thanks. Rats! Did a look up on the internet and no one has that record listed. :(

Why should not I refer to Peter Gabriels Security as Security? Albums 1 to 3 (Rain drops, Scratches, Melted) all were titled just Peter Gabriel, but Security is called Security.

Because Gabriel had no intentions of naming it.. Geffen records literally forced the album to be named so they could better manage the marketing.

Look back to the original vinyl.. the jacket, and liner notes etc.. just like the first three albums has no name. The name "Security" was only printed on the actual label adhered to the vinyl itself.

This mandate was so late in the process that there was not even time to put the name on the jacket. (others say that this was what Gabriel would not compromise on, but later runs of the album actually had a big ugly white sticker smack dab in the middle of the front cover that said .. in quotes if I remeber correctly, "SECURITY"... actually the sticker was off center and usually tilted .. having a "slap that sucka on there" look)

When "forced" to name it.. Peter finally "caved" and "Security" was chosen.. supposedly by Gabriel, but I don't think HE has spoken of this publicly.

But like the first three albums.. "Security" had never been meant to have a name. There was no working title etc.

So.. out of respect for the Patron Saint of Rock and Roll, I call his first four albums just that.. the first, second, third, and fourth..

Funny,. I did not even know that "names" had been dreamed up for the other three. :D

I did not realize Ozawa had recorded it with Berlin Symphony as well...

I ahve been lucky enough to hear it performed live here in my theatre.. twice!

Talk about rocking the house! I had chills.

Thanks for the link. I'll check into it. Would love to buy a great version of Camina Burana. I read once that Orff had set up Carmina Burana to include dance.

It's nice when O' Fortuna is included in commercials, though I never pay attention to the product part, just the music part...

Re: Gabriel forth album. You know, I thought that was really odd that the name was not on the spine of the LP cover. Now, I'm gonna have to go dredge it out... Thanks for the information on the story behind it. As for the names, I read them somewhere and it just seemed nicer than 1, 2, and 3 (and 4) Sort of like the Beatles White, Red and Blue albums... :)

I've never had a chance to catch Carmina Burana live, though I did catch Gabriel, Bowie and the Tubes in an outdoor concert which would have raised the roof of the stadium had there been one...

In fact .. the first time I "heard" Carmina here at the theatre it was a production being put on by "Cadence Dance Group" in conjunction with the "Providence Singers"

Definately.. a dance peice!

The next time it was more traditional.. full Orchestra (New Haven Symphony) and again.. the Providence Singers.
