Would this be the lens of choice for live concert photography on a Canon 7D?

The 16-35 on the 7D is a great pair. Its perfect for those wide shots right from the pit.

Depends where you are standing, 70-200 2.8 is a big fave, but for this focal range the 17-55 is better

Everyone keeps saying the 17-55 is a better lens for crop cameras, however its not entirely true. Much of lens choice depends on the photographer's style, subjects, and needs. Yes, the 17-55 offers a better focal length range and IS at a lower price point. However it skips out on build quality, weather sealing, and use on multiple sensor sizes.

I use a 16-35 daily on my 7D. I purchased it first for its build and weather sealing, secondly for its universal sensor size use. Some assignments, I have to use a 5D2 or 1D, so having a 17-55 would be useless or become an added expense. You learn to shoot with what you have.

i bought this lens to use for the upcoming wedding season but i saw a good deal for a 24 TS-E II so i traded this in with some cash for it. i only really got to use it one time but i thought it was pretty impressive at wider angles

Hey guys,

I'm looking to get this for my 7D. But I'm worried about size.

I'm going backpacking for a few months and need to travel very lightly. I figure the 25-56 range will be enough for Europe (can only afford to take one lens with me).

So I was just wondering about size..is it smaller and lighter than the Canon EF-S 17-55??

Would someone please be able to take a picture of it mounted on a 7d/5d please, pretty please!? :)

i would take the 17-55 any day of the week. longer focal length, IS, option for cheaper filters at 77mm vs 82mm, and a hood that can actually protect your front element. i don't have that same secure feeling walking around with a 10-22, 16-35 or 24 TS-E as i do with other lenses because the front element is so exposed and i must admit i'm not that careful. FWIW i've owned both

All of those qualities are positives, but don't see how they would affect his decision. He will be indoors, so unless you are concerned about spills or water spray the weather sealing isn't really a factor. Build quality - I understand that we like our lenses to feel solid but the 17-55 feels just as sturdy to me, it isn't an L but only in name as there aren't yet any EF-S L lenses and it weighs just about the same. Since he already has a 7D and given the resale value of the 17, the significant range advantage, I don't see how he would go wrong grabbing it over the 16.

I appreciate the feedback from you Staszek and Tats, I will be renting the Lens and the rental price for both 17-55 and 16-35 and tokina 11-16 are all relatively even. Talking a few dollars. I will be shooting a fast pace live dance show this weekend and will most likely be using my 50mm 1.2L most of the time but i wanted a wide angle lens for crowd shots and to vary it up a bit.

Since i am on a crop sensor, i think the tokina 11-16 might give me the 'widest' shot.

Just bought this lens and it's not sharp at all at any focal length so going to send it back for a refund.

Also just bought the 70-200 F2.8 II and that is such a different lens - totally sharp and 100% satisfied.

Those were general qualities of the 16-35. Those were aspects that I needed and wanted from a lens. The 17-55 would not handle my daily use as a photojournalist.

If he doesn't need any of those aspects, by all means, I 100% recommend the 17-55. Its a great lens for the price, but its not the only lens in that focal length range for crop cameras. Everyone's needs are different.
