I like the exposure in the first picture and the expressions but I don't really care for the compsition. I love the second picture, but it's a little overexposed for my taste. Better than I can do!

Yeah #1 is a touch overexposed. This can be corrected in PP easily enough.

You're getting some light reflecting off the backdrop and bleeding onto the edges of the subjects. Try to keep some distance between subject and background and don't blast more light on it than necessary. A white backdrop only needs to be about 1 stop brighter than the subject to keep it pure.

Yes but lets be clear about how the metering is done. If you are taking incident readings from the background then 1 stop would do it. If you are taking reflective spot readings (which can be done from camera or subject position without walking up to your background) then you need to be 3 stops over the incident subject exposure to achieve white and 1/3 stop over that will get you to white with no detail but you must watch clipping and the return from the background to the subject area.
