Hi, I'm new around here...been reading for several weeks, and really enjoy the sharing of info and the general tone of the forum. My question is about a hood I saw that someone had on their 17-40L. They had a EW-83J, which according to the B&H site is for the 17-55. The hood that came with my 17-40L is a EW-83E, which has much shallower petals. I'm wondering if the "J" hood causes vignetting if used on the 17-40 ? The deeper petals would be nice if they didn't get in the way. This is on a 20D ( 1.6 crop ) if that makes a difference. Thanks in advance for any replies from those who may have tried the "J" as above. best regards, George W

The larger, wider hood is designed for the lens when using it on a full frame lens, and you can effectively use a different hood which is smaller and will actually work better. I haven't play around with any for my self yet, but I need to soon. Here are a couple links you might wanna look at:

I am currently using the 17-40L with a EW-83J - works like a charm, no vignetting when used on a crop body. MUCH better than the original hood that it comes with (when the lens is mounted on a crop body). After a brief amount of research I found that many places agreed that the EW-83J is the best hood for the 17-40L on a crop body.

Thanks for your replies and links. I'm going to order a "J" hood for it, because I agree with you all that the standard "E" hood is less than optimal. George W
