It was a difficult decision as there were many fine entries. But one made me say that looks ridiculously cold.

And the winner is........Apollo 11......WOW, that is cold. Do you live in Antarctica or something? Congratulations Apollo 11!

PS....CSM, she is the opposite of cold.

Wow, thank you very much. I am honored, with so many great shots submitted!

A little background on the picture---a large portion of the American Falls, about 200 foot wide section, froze over this past February. It was the first time in decades that a large portion froze over. It was caused by a long stretch of single-digit temperatures and temps in the teens. The frozen falls lasted about 1 month and had many different looks. The cold streak, weather-wise, set a local record for days in teens & single-digit temps.

Because I work with the Maid of the Mist, I see the falls on a daily basis. This allowed me to see the freezing-over as it happened. This picture was taken the first day that I could get a clear shot with little mist----also, it was taken during the very early stages, as can be seen by the jaggedness of the icicles---the next day these were frosted over and became less threatening looking. Over the course of 4 weeks I took quite a few pictures, maybe 150. Clear pictures were few and far between, though, as the ice build-up at the base of the falls created a wind-tunnel type effect on the mist, which made the mist constantly present, another thing rare with the American Falls. Usually the mist is over the Canadian Horseshoe Falls and not prominent at the American. With the ice build-up, mist was almost constant. In the one month the falls was frozen over, there were only 3 days where I was able to get shots that were not dominated by clouds of mist.

The temperature on the day this picture was taken was……16 degrees F, and it was the 3rd straight week with a high below freezing…..this is what allowed the falls to freeze over!

Thanks again for liking my shot, and thanks for the nice comments everybody!

I'll post a new contest tomorrow.
