I have both a 580EX II and a 420EX and would like some advice on purchasing a lightstand, umbrella, etc. to use the two flashes together (IR wireless) for improved family portraits.

I was thinking of having the 420EX bounce from a 45" umbrella as the key light and use the hotshoe mounted 580EX II to provide fill. To do this I was looking at the following:

Impact 45" umbrella, white with removable black backing

Bogen/Manfrotto 2905 swivel umbrella adapter

Bogen/Manfrotto 3333 basic light stand - 9'

I'd also use some sort of "tupperware" modifier on the 580EX II to soften it a bit.

Does the above sound correct? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds right - except for the tupperware. I just did a shoot using Lumiquest ProMax System 80/20s on the flash heads with a bracket on the camera. Light wasn't bad at all and the space was too confined for umbrellas and strobes.

I bought my adapters from FlashZebra for half that price and they seem to be working just fine. http://www.flashzebra.com/umbrella_adapter.shtml (external link) Service was excellent, shipment fast.

I'm not certain about the tupperware solutions either. I also have a Lumiquest Mini-softbox and 80-20 Pocket Bouncer to choose from.

Thanks for the link to flashzebra.
