I have been looking for a quality "walkaround" lens for a Digital Rebel XTi. I consider myself to be an intermediate-level amateur. Photos will be used primarily for personal slideshows. I guess that I am looking for a lens a notch below Canon's L-series. Thank you for your thoughts.

the 17-70 is a great lens, that combined with the 70-300 apo dg sigma is a best bang for buck combo

This should be in the EF lenses forum... but

It's a very capable lens. Image quality is outstanding and would serve your purpose very nicely. I'm selling mine if you're interested. I have the 24-70L and don't really need it, and I'm in the process of moving from my 30D to the 1DmkIIn or mkIII for my fast FPS camera so I'll be selling my 20D soon and 30D eventually as well and won't be needing it.

Hello!

I have the 17-70 and it's a great "all around" lens!

I also have the 17-70 sigma. Excellent lens. It performs like a much more expensive lens. Highly recomend.

First step........ Take the lens cap off.

Another recommendation here. It is a great lens. The image quality is superb.

Hard to go wrong and a great travel lens too given range and weight.

Thoughts?

Can't be beat as a walkaround for that cheap...I love it. Everything you see in these two galleries was shot with it:

Probably about the same image quality.

I wouldn't give up the constant f/2.8 for an extra 20mm on the long end though. That's just me.

At least as good if stopped down a little. Softer than the Tamron (at the same aperture) with the Sigma wide open, and the Tamron can open up even further. I found the Sigma to have more consistent focussing (the Tamron would occasionally miss focus in non-ideal conditions).

I have the 17-70 and the XTI, it’s an excellent walk around, for the range, for the focus and for the money, focus better than the tamron
