The second is a bad HDR attempt... any idaes of what I could do to improve it?

I think the problem is that this does not appear to be a situation well suited for HDR. It might help to post the non-HDR color version. I like the idea of the composition.

As it does for me. The last photo looks most representative of all previous versions including the HDR. Doesn't hurt any to try HDR, but the process just isn't suited well for a subject such as this. Interesting experiment, though.
