Recent engagement session. I tried to work with existing light, but I wanted something with bit more of a cinematic feel.

Great work Zach. Mind sharing your setup for this shot?

Thanks Rylan!

Tenoverthenose - I like the idea but the overall environment of this shot is pretty busy and the last thing my eyes go to is the couple.

Jordan I know exactly what you are saying, but for some reason I'm cool with it. I like the feel of the shot and how the couple is soaked up in the environment and blend in as if they are part of the scene. Your eyes take in everything and then find the couple - almost like a where's waldo setup.

I was thinking of where's waldo too haha. The more I look at it, the more I like it, it really is a great shot man. Good stuff

Agreed, but I think that's part of the charm of the shot.

cheers, juice (Canon shooter, Elinchrom lighter, but pretty much agnostic on brands.)

I ordered my first flash last week, and been reading this thread since!

I picked up a Yongnuo YN-465 flash and some YN-04 II triggers, but for some reason the reciever isn't firing the flash (I am working on it at the moment) but since this is my first flash, I am still trying to master the basics of manual flash.

Here are my first proper attempts - these are self portraits, using the remote release and the nifty fifty. Flash is on-camera, the first was shot with a home made beauty dish type of thing (made from a silver coloured paper bowl, and a plastic pint glass!), the second was shot with a home made snoot (black straws and black card) as I was going for a moody look.

Settings: 1/250, F1.8, ISO 100, possibly 1/6 flash power (maybe 1/3, but seem to remember turning it down)
PP: surface blur using a layer mask, then painted through to reveal my eyes, glasses and mouth. Sharpening +3 (as default in DPP)

PP: desaturated, sharpening +3 (as default in DPP)

I know I have a long way to go before I get anywhere near the quality of the work on here, so any C&C would be appreciated.

I dig this shot as well. Well executed. Great balance of flash and ambient. Did you gel your flash at all?
