Nicely done, everyone.

Just a quick setup shot, speedlight held off camera right.

^I agree! Much better! Good job with avoiding glare on the glasses, too!

Thanks guys! Really appreciate the comments!

Just have to read through this whole thread now and learn as much as I can! I have ordered some Yongnuo RF-602 triggers so will have a play with off camera flash too when I get them!

Looks great Peter. I think the second shot would have benefited from pulling back a bit so the model doesn't look like she's breaking out of the frame. :D

thx Rob, great suggestion I may resize it :)

Nice shot but very unflattering for her legs. Most girls and women would want to avoid that angle and type of shot.

My 2 cents.

Robert, I gotta take you to task here. First, I acknowledge, as is obvious, your 2 cents is worth a lot more than most peoples'.

In this particular instance, however, I disagree. This is not a thin girl. That's obvious from how high her hip is. Her legs show no cellulite, no obvious veins popping, rather just large. That is not in and of itself unflattering.

My 2 cents is that it's a fine pic of a lovely lady who has a larger body than the thin models we're so used to seeing.

And I do hear ya loud and clear about it being the photographer's responsibility to "make" the model look good, by perhaps hiding unflattering parts of their bodies behind things, etc. I've read that in every book I own on posing.

I understand all that Mark and I didn't want to imply that it wasn't a great image or that the lovely lady doesn't look good. A simple adjustment of the leg would be more flattering and that's all I'm saying. I'm not judging her body type or in any way saying it's a bad photo.

Pretty hard light and a bit too high Mark. You've got some very hard shadows and the classic raccoon eyes. In that type of situation without a modifier I would use the flash more as fill get a more even light, although flat, but it would eliminate the hard shadows and drama which usually isn't the best light for photographing children.

Thank you. Now that I take a "harder" look at it, you are completely correct. As usual. And I appreciate that. I had my friend's kid holding my flash, and while I was directing him, I guess I didn't do a very good job of that.

Also, what I didn't mention, was that I did absolutely no PP at all, not one whit, so perhaps I could have lightened the shadows. I was trying for strong light, but obviously unsuccessfully so it's back to the drawing board. I do have quite a few more. I'll take a look and post a better one for critique.

Thank you, Robert.

last week was 3 young ladies (2 senior and 1 freshman college) but all 3 were named Katelyn spelled slightly different

so here is Katelyn number 1's senior photo i liked.. parents haven't picked out yet.. so no editing..

radio poppers and a single 580EXII with a 1/4 CTO gel in the 28 x 28 westcott box

i have the vertical and wider version of this but i like the land scape pushed in tight for wallet and name

Pham-

I'm a huge fan of your work and trying to learn from you, so I'm trying to understand this shot. From the catchlights, the speedlight/softbox is camera left, and the sun is...a giant hairlight? :) So are you using the speedlight setup for fill, with a 1/4 CTO gel to match the color temp? I'm trying to learn, so I'd like to know about this one-strobe setup that you did!

I'm sure I'm not the only one but maybe I'll be the only one who says it, but does this image look a little spooky? There's something a little eerie about it to me; perhaps it's the long lashes and makeup on a child, or the way her eyes aren't smiling (neither is her smile!). Not to judge, mind you, never a judger am I, but this gave me a start when I first saw it.
