That looks a lot better IMO.

Now that I see the greyish tint in the other one, I completely agree with you.

What do you guys think of this? My first attempts at OCF.

1. Nephew. Single 430EX bare flash to the right.

2. Mom and son. 430EX bare on the left.

Both are nice shots, but both are overexposed, tone down the exposure or use some kind of modifiers at least to softening the light from the flash, avoid to use bare as much as you can for these type of shots.

^^^^ Thanks. Much appreciated. Dumb question - how did you tell that it is overexposed?

I dunno, but the clothes seems lack of details, even the first one the skin seems unnatural color at glance almost to the left side of his face.

I can still see details in the whites so maybe its not technically overexposed. But it certainly seems a bit bright to the eye. It makes the skin seem unnatural. Nice shots though.

It's not just visual. I checked the shot in Photoshop and looked at the numbers. There is a loss of detail and some clipping in the whites and the facial mask histogram shows some overexposure.

Thanks for the comments guys. Much much appreciated. I do agree the face is a bit overexposed now that you mention it. Minor issue to sort out :) New to this game and photography in general.

Its alright, you will have time to learn more then do great photography sooner or later, just keep shooting and practice more, and we are here to help you as we were needing help before and everyday, my advise is that you start to read more about light and exposure, this will help you to improve your photography no doubt, as we all want to understand and learn about lighting as one so important thing in photography.

speaking of blown highlights on faces! (guilty). Thank goodness he had a moustache to help me prevent having detail missing on the entire half of the face.
