Wife wants to buy me a birthday present and I considered a lense for my camera. Now this is where I'm stuck. I currenty own a Cannon 300D to be updated in the future, figure I will learn with better glass.

I do mostly landscapes, animals etc. I was looking at 24 - 105 IS F4 or 24 - 85 IS, or is there another lense I could consider.

Any comments most welcome.

Thanks Brian

The lenses you may want to consider would also depend on the lenses you currently have. The 24mm at the widest end may not be wide enough on a 300D, unless you are not fond of doing sweeping landscapes and prefer to go a bit more telephoto to crop in on specific details.

Also, the 24-85mm lens does not have IS.

Sorry about that ....... I only have the kit lenses that came with the camera. EFS 18 - 55 and EF 90 - 300 4.5 - 5.6 USM. I don't use the 90 - 300 much

I have taken some 9000 shots with my 300D and sometime next year hope to get another camera maybe a 400D or 30 or 40 D.

You don't take many shots with the telephoto zoom, so it looks like you don't need anything really long.

What range of the 18-55 do you use now? All of it? Do you sometimes wish it was wider, or longer? Or would you like a faster lens that can blur backgrounds when you are shooting animals (I'm assuming these are pets unless you mean that you shoot them with the 90-300)?

Some ideas for a reasonable price:

Faster and sharper than the kit lens in the same range:
Tamron 17-50 f/2.8
Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM

A little faster and longer on the long end
Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5

Wider
Canon EF-S 10-22 f/3.5-4.5
Sigma 10-20

Much faster
Sigma 30 f/1.4
Canon 35 f/1.4L
Canon 50 f/1.4
Canon 85 f/1.8

The animals I take are mostly taken with the 90 - 300 as I cannot get close enough in the bush, as sneaking and stealth go, I'm like a buffalo in gum boots.
