So I've been taking city life, nature and landscape photos for a few months and I've finally got the courage to start shooting some people and events. I have a few small informal family events where I want to practice at in the next few weeks. I'm wondering how everyone here handles the funny looks and questions that come when someone decides to bring a camera and starts snapping away.

How do you walk into a room with your camera and get people to feel comfortable enough so that you can get some good shots without having to ask them to pose all of the time.

I don't have a huge system - XTi with a 17-85 and 430ex with a bounce card since a few of the events will be inside in the evening.

Any suggestions?

Dress nicely and go for it. If you are a male, a sports jacket is a good all around option. Don't even give their responses another thought. If you act confidently, they will accept you. :)
