FILE NUMBERING

I was just wondering if this happens to anyone else.
When I load pics into my computer, they get mixed up.
Some go in as img_pic number, but others go in as _mg_pic number.
It is not a huge deal, just it goes through all the img before the _mg, so the pics that changed aren't in order.
Hopefully someone knows why this happens.

You're using two different color spaces when you shoot. Images shot in the sRGB color space will have a file prefix of IMG_XXXX. Image shot in the Adobe color space will have a _MG_XXXX prefix. Unless you're using a professional printing setup with CMYK standards, you're best off just using sRGB and sticking with it.

This very question was how I found POTN.

IMG_XXXX is used when the image is shot in the sRGB colour space

_MG_XXXX is used when the image is shot in AdobeRGB

I'm not too sure about the reason for this, I think it has something to do with industry file naming standards.

Interesting, how do you change the color space. Do you mean white balance or something else?

Not white balance, but rather the way the colors are rendered for output. It's in the menu (you can find it in your manual).

but if I don't change anything in the camera then they should all file inthe same way should they not. Sometimes I can take a series of say ten shots, and three will go to _mg and the rest img

OK so sRGB will be img and adobe RGB will be _mg.
Which would I want to have my camera set to/
the manual says that adobe RGB is mostly used for commercial printing and other industrial uses, so I should have it set to sRGB then right?
I just checked my camera, and it was set to adobe RGB.
Any more info would be much appreciated, as I am now confused

You should have your camera set to sRGB. If you had it set to Adobe RGB, it would use that color space in the Creative zones, but if you then switched the camera to one of the basic zones (Green Box. Portraits, Sports, etc.) then the color space would switch back to sRGB (I believe, but haven't verified) thus giving you the different file names.

Any chance you are moving between a 'preset' mode and a manual mode while shooting? My XT won't shoot in RAW when I choose a 'preset' mode. Maybe you are moving between the modes and it's changing something?

OK, so I changed it to sRGB. I will have to go back through my files and figure out which ones switched, but I am sure that I probably switched for some reason and just don't remember.

Thank god someone asked this...I was just about to post the same question..LOL. I think the 40D's come default in Adobe RGB since i don't recall ever changing it before.

Actually, they come with the sRGB setting enabled, but a new camera user can easily change settings if they're not familiar with how to set the various camera functions.

I don't remember ever changing mine, but I am sure that I must have. Will the pics I take now have a different look, or what difference does the color spaces have?

I don't think you'll see a perceptible difference. As noted before, the Adobe RGB color space is for outputing to print. If you're primarily viewing your photos online or using standard processors for printing your images (such as you'd find in the mini-labs or most online processor), sRGB will be fine.

You might try resetting your camera. That is, reset all custom functions and start from scratch. See page 147 in your manual.

This will get things back on track and eliminate any strange settings you may have inadvertently made.

To get a proper sorting of your images in your computer when using Windows Explorer (not to be confused with Internet Explorer), use the "Detail" display and sort by date/time by clicking on the date/time column header. This will put the files in date/time order, regardless of the file name.

Clicking the date/time header will let you sort newest first or oldest first.
