Thanks for the friendly replies you gave after posting a 40D pic over here thinking it was made with my MkIII. As requested 2 more pics. First one was taken today in lousy dark weather. Second one was made at an airshow held here recently. I am really happy with my MkIII.

Use of the Mk 3 with a Tamron 2x Teleconvertor.

I happened to have a Tamron 2x TC which I had several years ago. I have from time to time used it with my 5D and 75-200 L lens without any error problem except that the aperture do not double (it reads 2.8 as 2.8 and not 5.6) Wonder if it is ok to use it with the mkIII.

Peter

Peter, I have a Tamron 2x as well, and I believe I did try it on the 1D when I had it and don't think there were any issues .... other than of course the effect on the AF due to less light.

Thanks Kenny, My 1D is going to arrive today and will give it a try. Good to know there is someone out there to share similar experiences.

Just brought home my 1D MkIII. Guess the first thing to do - go through the Printed User Manual. The buttons and settings are very intuitive and the joystick says what it is - a joy to use.

I tested the ISO which I have read so much about - took several shots on it with my 50mm lens under flourescent lightning at ISO3200. No grains. It beats my 5D flat and I am now paying about a tenth more of the price of the 5D (bought in 2006 for over US3100). Wow.

Will be going to the seaside to hunt for eagles tomorrow. Hope to bring home some pics or else by sunday will get some shots on motocross with the 10fps drive which I am so eager to get my finger on.

Very Cool - Congratulations!

Oh, btw I thought it was a Tamron 2x, but it's actually a Sigma 2x that I have for what that is worth.

Enjoy the new toy!

I'm going to an air show tomorrow, I was thinking that the AF's default settings should be ok or do you guys recommend different settings for aircraft?

I'm using centre point and ROF. Both work well.
I'm also using max. and min aperture setting. With my 300 f4 max. 5.6 and min. 11.

Using TV and ISO safety shift results in a sort of "auto ISO" This way I can keep my shutterspeed fast enough.

This is a method described somewhere in this thread and it works very well! Using higher ISO with a MkIII is not really a problem. Depending on the wheater you could play a little with + or - EV.

I guess you've noticed English isn't my native language... hope you understand my workmethod 8-)

I'd like to add "ROF" to the Acronym thread but I think there is still some confusion as to what the true meaning of ROF actually is. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what is the best and most concise explanation? (I'd like to get a few people in agreement before I add it)

My 1D Mark III is my first venture into 1D territory. Does this ROF "feature" apply to all 1D series cameras, or just the Mark III? Or are there others?

ROF - Ring Of Fire is when you select the outer ring of AF points

(see page 84 of 1Dmk3 manual)

(see page 84 of 1Dmk3 manual)

Ok, so it is simply allowing the camera to choose from all of the AF points. Selecting the outer ring activates all 45 points and the camera determines which AF point(s) to use. Just to be clear, this is not to be confused with limiting user-selection to the outer 9 points, right?

Is any of this incorrect? Part of the reason I ask is because I've seen/heard "ROF" explained a few times and it is not always the same explanation. I'm not sure everybody is on the same page with this term.

I know the ROF term applies to the 1D MarkIII. I assume it also applies to the 1Ds MarkIII. Are there any others?

Had a trial run of the 1D MkIII after going through the user manual. Went to the seaside to look for eagles - but not successful.

Look no further to test the 10fps... it is right in your very own garden. So shot my puppy T Rex. Energetic and full of life - dashing here and there. But the 10fps stopped the movement on what you want. This was shot with the use of a fill in flash set at 1/250 (did not realise that 1D is capable of 1/300 on flash).

On my 5D using 3fps I had difficulty in getting this shot as you do not know when to shoot.
