Well, everyone, I think I am at the end of my journey. I got a call from the Canon rep today, saying, that if I wanted to, I could keep the body (that works!) I already have!! He will provide the stuff that wasn't in the box (instruction manuals, CDs, etc.), and start the warranty on it as of today. The images off of this body are much better than I've seen with the other three (yes, three) that I've had previously...when I have time, I will post some unedited images...

Time will tell now...

I hope it is resolved for you, and that others journeys will end well too. Mine was a frustrating, expensive and tortuous experience but as of now I don't think I could be happier with a camera than I am with my 1Ds MkIII.

Glad to hear it! I just got mine back from Canon repair today. It actually powers on now, so that's a big improvement. :) I'll hopefully be testing it out this weekend at the 13-under Softball World Series to see if it can keep up with my MkIIn.

Went to the Bon Odori - an annual Japanese Event in our local scene. Set at ASA2500 with 1/250s and flash set at high speed sync to fill in, the frontal light dd not dominate with its harsh light. No noise and pic is taken as if in full daylight setting.

If you were shooting at 1/250 with the 1DMkIII then HSS should not have been on regardless of whether or not you enabled it on the speedlite. ;)

Nice pic.

My 1D Mark III now works absolutely flawlessly, but I'm stuck deciding whether to upgrade to the 1Ds. I don't need the speed at all. Has anyone made this upgrade?

as indicated above I took a somewhat tortuous route there by way of a 5d and 40D :) I had issues with my 1D from the beginning, it took some amazing shots but was unpredictable as far as focus, it took several trips to Canon, including the submirror fix trip and all the software upgraded. In the end I just still was not happy with it and that was probably as much a result of the situation as with it being broken, just didn't feel I could trust it to get the shot even when I did everything right. I ended up selling it at a stiff discount and then eventually getting the nerve to try the 1Ds and can say it is an amazing camera which has none of the issues I had with the 1D. I'm still leaning it but am truly impressed with its capabilities and don't feel I need the higher frame rate either. I did need to get bigger CF cards and more hard drive storage though. :)

I'm still determining how to restructure my "kit" but this camera is really the only one I need. :)

Oh I guess the question I didn't ask that you need to answer is, why? You say it works fine, and you don't need the speed, but do you need full frame? That's the primary difference. Maybe consider waiting on the 5D MkII ?

I agree with Kenyc... If you are not going for extremely large prints do you need the 21MP or will the expected 16MP of the next generation of 5D be sufficient...
Also the no crop factor will give you that little extra on your wides but you'll lose it on you long lenses...

The digital photo printers such as Fuji has very high resolution in its ouput which will somehow compensate for our smaller input images. I have used smaller images and enlarged it 2x and the output in photo print was excellent.

Similarly I have also tried outputs in large banners from the 5D and blown into 4ft by 8ft and they were excellent (via ink jet ). So I think here we have to rely on a high resolution output source.

I'm still waiting for Rob Galbraith to tell me if my camera works or not. If he doesn't do it pretty soon, I might have to figure it out for myself.

I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!
