There are way too many variables to know whether you're having a problem or not, but if you shooting handheld, your shutter speed should be at least 1 over the focal length. (i.e. 100 mm lens should be at least 1/100 second) Faster is better as far as getting sharp images goes.

If you're shooting in decent light, and your lens is 'hunting,' that's not a good thing. You could be having a problem with either the lens, the body, or (heaven forbid) both.

Spot on! 1/100 4.0. Just wish I knew how to upload the photos before and after to this sight to show you the improvement

Why not report if something positive occurs? We need more positive energy on this forum. For the last year it's been a real downer here...Post some killer photos.

You're right. We do need some sunshine. I'll do my best to post something worthy.

If you have read any of my past mails you will have realised that I am very new to the technologies of photography. I am at that point where I am sapping up all the knowledge I can.

I am lucky enough to be able to have purchased the Mark III. My machine has been sent away for the Canon repair and returned 'repaired'.

My question is, are all you other guys able to hand hold your Mark III's and produce a sharp image? I am not able to do this and need to know if it is me or my machine at fault.

Sorry if this is in the wrong section but thought that it fitted here as I am trying to determine if it is me or the machine at fault.

Would appreciate your thoughts .

I must add that my machine is constantly searching when i put the lens onto auto.

If you place it on a tripod and the images are sharp using a cable release then I'm afraid it's you... Belmondo's advice is sound on shutter speed to focal length, some even times it by 1.3 to allow for the crop factor just to be on the safe side...

Got my Mark III back last night. Haven't tried it out yet due to spending 2 hours on the phone to Dell trying to get my external hard drive working via esata. Five day turnaround including transit time. Got the 2gb CF card and the extended warranty. Fingers crossed....xxxxxxx

It's been two months since I signed up for the recall (17 Nov) and my camera finally went out yesterday.

Pleased to say that it is MY error which seems to be the norm these days. ;)

I must be learning a little as I did venture to put in 80 when using my 70mm lens and 250 with my 200mm lens also with good results.

Many thanks

I would also recommend increasing the ISO value (which should increase your shutter speed at the same focal length and aperture) since the 1dmk3 handles noise really well.

Yes, I did as my first shot after changing settings was quite dark. Thanks

I just received my camera. On the repair form it says "AF mechanism adjustment, update firmware." It doesn't say anything addressing the catastrophic Err99 problem that I experienced in Alaska. I just called the service center and the rep said that they fixed the camera, so it must have been a software problem. I asked how could software progressively get worse over time and result in an error like that. He didn't really have an answer (said something like data fragmentation which makes no sense) but said if I have the problem again they'll take care of it. I'm glad to have the camera back, but I BETTER not have that problem again!!

What kind of Err99 problem did you have? Mine got worse and worse until the camera finally died on me in Alaska. Since I've been back I haven't seen the problem.
