Hi, this is my first attempt at HDR.
I think this was 4 shots and used Photomatix basic, Tone mapping and saved to JPG. The only thing the original HDR was much nicer but the JPG doesnt catch my eye. Any ideas?

Not bad in the sense that it is not at first apparent that its an HDR.
I'm not quite sure, as I'm not sure what features basic has

The HDR has killed the highlights in the body that make a car look good. Seen this?

Better, but still too much IMO.

I think the hdr should look natural, and remember theres a time and place for hdr when your clipping shadows or highlights.

Cars don't really benefit from HDR IMHO unless the background is really uncomplicated.

Is that a T-5?

Never, ever tone map, just to use it.

Only use it when your exposures are at complete opposite ends of the spectrum, and in order to attain perfect exposure -- you have to shoot brackets. Or, do it with a scene that begs for it visually. Details, etc.

This is really just an "autotrader" snapshot.

I had to tone map so I could save as JPG, other wise I couldnt. What made it "too much" was the mega unsharpen mask I used.

I didnt do bracket shooting I just changed the shutter speed for all the shots.
