This is a quote from this weeks Amateur Photographer (UK weekly 1/12/07 edition). Someone was asking the question if to buy 5D now or wait for replacment, the answer was as follows:

'Just a couple of weeks ago Vic Soloman from Canon UK's Product Intelligence division told me there is no reason to update the EOS 5D at the moment, as there is no competition for it. Sounds a bit fishy, but that's from the horse's mouth.
- Damien Demolder, Editor'

I think that's interesting, but they have updated stuff before even without direct competition. No a perfect comparison, but the 580EX was updated even when no one thought it would be.

No competition!? They can not possibly be this remiss, and internally silo'd. Many people's opinion is that they are currently getting beat on either side of the 5D, e.g. D3 and D300.

Typical Canon arrogance, they still think they're the only camera manufacturer on the planet. If the 5D MkII isn't coming in January, I possibly will switch to D300...

+1 . I always wanted to have 5D sensor in 1d body or most likely better than 1d body and there it is. It's called D3. I am not switching within next year for sure but when my 5d is due to exchange i will defenetly consider it.

I have been wandering if they were going to update it too. However, I love mine and would not be in a big hurry to upgrade even when it comes out.

A 5D w/ weather sealing and 5fps would be a killer camera IMO.

Since the 5D is (was) the low light king, a focus system that is as good a Nikons would be good. Add weather sealing and usable 6400 iso, and we're off to the races.

5D2 needs to hit soon IMO.

In the persuit of total contentment, Canon does not help :)

No competition??? That is total rubbish and Canon know it.

The 5D update better come soon and it better be good or I suspect a lot of people, including me, will be switching to the Nikon D3.

I would add these, and some higher ISO!

But then i would have no desire to lust after the 1 series.

I doubt that Vic Soloman said any such thing. There is competition for the 5D - it just isn't full frame. And I believe that there will be more full framers, from Nikon and Sony within the next year.

Why not at least move upward, to the D3?!

Budget?

You in the US pay around $5000,- for the D3, we here in Europe pay around 4500 Euro (lowest price) for the D3, which is more than $6500,- with the current conversion rates. That comes close to the US price for a 1DsIII!

BTW: I never understood why we here in Europe have to pay around 40% more than US photographers for the same equipment (it's unfair!).

Because the average person earns more money. Plus the fact that the competition is higher in the bigger US markets. It sucks, but the good thing is you can always have a friend in the US buy it for you and then ship it. Or you could take a cheap flight to the great NYC and make it a nice long weekend vacation!
