Wow those are some neat shots for a history geek like me. I am still working my way through. What did you shoot those with? That NV scope is crazy. (Nice to see the Commanding Officer was committed to the job ;))

The shots in Nha Trang were shot with a Miranda GT and most of the ones at Cam Ranh Bay were done with a Mamiya 1000DTL I bought after I was transferred.

Miranda GT:

Mamiya 1000DTL:

I still have the Mamiya, but I sold the Miranda to finance the Mamiya. The Mamiya 1000 DTL was one of the first cameras with a dual (spot and averaging) metering system. The 1000 represented the camera's 1/1000 max shutter speed.

The NV scope was first generation. The current night vison scopes are tiny by comparison.

Cool. Yea I know the new NV scopes are tiny. It is just funny to see how things change.

I think you are correct on this one, I think it looks like Coolidge indeed. I am interested by the British officer.. I wonder what the occasion was.

INTRODUCTION

These days everyone has a camera with them – either inside their cell phone or a small point and shoot – someone within a block of you has a camera with them. Some have said that with new technology anyone can take a picture equal to the professionals. Without getting into a debate about hardware and skill I will make this statement:
The difference between a photograph and a snapshot is the passion of the art.

It is the passion of the art that makes me wake up at 1:00am to drive across Oregon to catch the sun rising over the Painted Hills.
It is the passion of the art that makes me hike around a lake in a downpour to get “the shot”.
It is the passion of the art that pushes me to expand my skill.

Over this past year I have made many new friends in photography. Some I know in person, others only through the Internet – but we all share the passion of the art. In addition to sharing the passion, we also share our knowledge. I am not sure if you would see half of the photos in this book if it weren’t from some of the tips that these friends have taught me.

Over the next 80+ pages you will see the Pacific Northwest from my eyes. From Portland to Seattle. The coast to the mountains. The desert to the valley. Sun and blue skies to clouds and rain. Flowers and life to death and decay. So many of these things are taken near the places we live and work – but often go unnoticed. One of my goals in photography is to make people aware of how beautiful the creation around them is – both manmade and natural.
