He looked at it but decided it's too heavy :o

I've also read somewhere that DO lenses must be used somewhat differently...

And the 300 f/4 IS is the almost the price of a 100-400 :-(

I don't know what the market is like over in Switzerland, but over here a used 30D + used 100-400 would be NEAR the cost of a 40D and 70-300 DO IS...

With DO lenses you have to modify your PP process and deal with contrast and curves more than you would on a non-DO lens... nothing crazy...

that's a good point, he doesn't have to have a 40D, a 30D is just as good as the 40D in taking photos of planes.

I think the 100-400 is more important than the body. it's good glass and it's got IS.

You know, he's REALLY difficult! He wants a 40D and not a 30D (for different reasons which aren't all good, but it's not worth discussing)

I guess the main question is: is the 70-300IS that bad?
Would a bridge be better?

I know, but I already have nightmares of thinking how I will show him the few basi PP that he'll need to do  So don't expect him to have any real PP process

Seeing mine, he decided that the 1-4 is too big and heavy...

he can't expect to have to both the 40D and a good lens with out spending the money. the 70-300IS would be a good place to start. apply the right amount of USM and he will get some keepers. Also if he is printing out the photos rather than just looking at them on the computer then he could find he doesn't see the differences.

Sorry, but I have no idea what a "bridge" is in terms of lenses...

Here are some photos taken with the 70-300 IS: http://dpchallenge.com/lens.php?LENS_ID=1241 (external link)

That's what I think too... I've seen some very good shots coming out of this lens.

And if he buys the 40D and it doesn't cut it for him, I could rebuy it quite cheap

It wasn't a lens, just forgetting the idea of a dSLR and buying one of those cameras (S5 IS foe example)
