Mooo everyone!

A small question on behalf of my dad... He wants to buy a dSLR and considering the 40D. He's coming from Nikon but would have anyway to buy all new lenses as his lenses are a bit "worn out"... His main shooting is plane spotting. But he wants/needs an IS lens. And the reviews he saw on the 70-300IS aren't very good. A 100-400 isn't a possibility as it is too heavy/big/expensive. But he needs the 300mm reach (I already suggested a 70-200 f4 IS)

Do you see any solution for him? Would the 70-300IS (non DO) be good? Non Canon lens? A bridge?

Have a nice weekend everyone!

I'm open to any suggestion.

The 70-300 IS isn't bad from everything I've heard. It's considered miles above the 75-300 IS. You sure he wasn't seeing reviews on the 75-300? That said, he's going to find 300 too little and end up chasing down the 100-400 anyhow. Lock your 100-400 at 300 and have him try a few shots; then let it run out to the full 400. If he's spotting he needs to see the registrations, and be able to read them, right?

that's a good point, he doesn't have to have a 40D, a 30D is just as good as the 40D in taking photos of planes.

I think the 100-400 is more important than the body. it's good glass and it's got IS.

I wholly agree!

DDA wrote in post #4459413 (external link)
You know, he's REALLY difficult! He wants a 40D and not a 30D (for different reasons which aren't all good, but it's not worth discussing)

I guess the main question is: is the 70-300IS that bad?
Would a bridge be better?

No, it isn't - just won't be long enough for him, even on a crop body.

OMG OMG OMG!!

You could totally knock me over with a feather right now!
I just got back my large 40 page Theology research paper. Not only did I get a freaking A, but the professor asked if she could update her writing coursepack (that is full of examples from students papers on what to do for each section, along with full papers) with my paper!!!

I didn't know what to say, I am sure my eyes widened to about the size of dinner plates when I heard her say it. WOW.

Anyways, I just had to tell someone.

CHEERS!!

Way to go Riley!! That's awesome. I'm really proud of you!!

This shot was taken with the much-maligned 75-300 IS.

I have the older 75-300 IS...it isn't a perfect lens...but for the price it was never a bad lens...and the 70-300IS in a vast improvement...so it should be decent...the DO version is a great little lightweight travel lens...so there are choices at that level...and unless you are an extreme pixel peeper...most folks tend to be happy with any one of those lenses.

The 70-300 is fine... lots of people mix this one up with a 75-300 (amazing how they just absolutely cannot tell the difference between one number..).

My feared Cow in Sheepskin shot was done using a 70-300 IS. :p

Met up with PermaPuddle for a bit today (crappy, rainy weather).

Here are a few from Mt. Angel Abbey:
(really tough lighting...ISO 3200 on most shots today)

Thanks Cat. It's really a magnificent place. Unfortunately, the lights were not on today so we really had a challenge.

Those are some nice Abby shots Chris. The lighting didn't look that tough by the looks of your pictures...they came out great.

Thanks. I owe it all to the 5D. It was really dark in there.
