they did change some settings...one of them affected the tracking. However, Dan and I just shot 299 shots...of him running toward the camera (he's forbidden me to post them). The camera locks focus on 1 or 2 shots, loses him for as many and then gains him back for a few. There are shots that are completely OOF, just like before.

The repair notice says NOTHING...

just this:

all adjustments and corresponding testing have been completed to canon factory standards. Firmware was updated to the latest versions.

It doesn't say if they fixed it or just examined it. And my firmware had already been updated.

The camera is doing exactly what it did before.

My settings: iso 320 70mm f2.8 1/640. Plenty fast enough to track a big man not running quickly on high speed.

It tracks left to right and vice versa, just fine and locks on stationary objects just fine. but today about 50% (and that's being generous) of the shots were misfocused or OOF. We've both been over them...and are completely shocked.

I'm so unhappy I could cry.

This was with the 24-70? Not a real speed focusing lens...try a couple of different lenses before you toss in the towel.

Time for a reality check, Permie. It's just a camera, and even though this situation wreaks, it's not the end of the world. Canon will make it right, although obviously not on your schedule now. Make sure they understand the depth of your frustration when you call them.

In the end, it will all work out, but in the meantime, you did manage to get Dan to do some exercise.

Too bad we don't live closer. You'd be welcome to any of my cameras till yours is fixed. I'm not using them these days.

okay, I think you were right. (I didn't know the 24-70 wasn't a speed focusing lens...I would have thought it was)

We just shot 66 shots with the 70-200 F4IS and 44 with the 400 (at high iso's because it was getting dark) There were about a dozen mis-focused shots (most of them w/the 400 because I have a hard time holding it still). Considering the low light, I'm amazed at how few there were.

So, in switching lenses 2 of the 3 tested came back with approx 90% keeper ratio which is extremely acceptable. With the 70-200, only 3 or 4 of the 66 frames mis focused. That was a HUGE difference from testing with the other lens.

(I checked the lens focus and had to turn off the -1 setting for all because it focuses properly now).

I'll test it again tomorrow in better light but I'm am feeling more hopeful. Thanks Wooly, I was all set to call canon again (I'd been over the CF's and couldn't get it to track...) but I think it's working. Dan looked over the shots and said that it was a completely different result (you wouldn't even think it was from the same camera) using the two telephoto lenses....
