At the moment I own a Sigma 18-200 DC but I'm thinking on buying a Canon 70-200 F/4 L IS.

I would like to know if can be used for general purposes (Family reunion, dinner with friends) or is too "big" (angle too narrow) for group photos?

I'm a photography enthusiast and sorry if my question is somehow dumb!

70mm on your 400D equates to 112mm on a full-frame camera, which is a bit long for such things.

It's still a stonking lens though - I'd get it anyway and complement it with a cheap 50mm f/1.8 "nifty fifty" which would be ideal for indoor shots such as the ones you mention.

The 70-200 goes from medium telephoto to long telephoto on APS-C. Indoors this means it will be tough to get more than a single person's head and shoulers in the frame.

You have the 18-200.....just spend a day working between 70-200 only to see.

Realistically, a 70-200 is not a one lens kit like the 18-200.....you have to pair it up with a second lens.

I use a Canon 5DIII and a Sony A7rIII

Yesterday I noticed that almost every photos I took in a dinner with friends the focal length was always between the 18 mm and 50 mm.

Since i'm not a pro and really don't have much money to spend, maybe the aprox is to travel always with both (70-200 and 18-200) and sigma will be used to small indoor spaces.

I still have the kit lens (18-55) but i wonder if the sigma 18-200 is better for indoor shooting?

I don't see why the 18-200 lens should be better than the 18-55 lens @18-55mm.

If I'd be you I'd sell the 18-200 and use the 18-55 with the 70-200. Too much overlap with the 18-200/70-200 and I guess the 18-55 is better than the 18-200. But not sure.
