I just got my Canon XTi in late June and only had it a few days when I stole this shot of my dad resting against a tree on the 4th of July. Any comments or suggestion for this newbie is greatly appreciated...

Welcome to POTN :)....You got a great exposure there with nice colors but his interest seems to be elsewhere. I think this pic would've been better had you gotten some eye contact with the camera.

Welcome !
I agree with jra on the eye contact, I always frame the shot when they are not looking then give them an oi !! and when they look , hit the shutter button.
Saying all that I like the shot as it is well exposed and is a nice candid image.
(The cooler in the background bugs me a little)

Regards, Tony.

Nice work. He has a lot of character in his face. Next time try to get in closer and have a nice tight face shot with him looking at you.

Hey, grab em when you can! I think the quality of the exposure is right on, Nice use of fill flash from the camera. Great focus on the eyes. True, it is always more captivating to have a less busy BG, and the subject looking at the lens, but this is a very nice candid. Excellent start with a lot of potential on your part.

Practice, practice, and practice some more, and when you think you have got it right, start over.

Lets try another. This is my daughter, Kayla. When she notices that camera pointing in her direction, she has this thing about going into silly poses...
