The 400D/XTi is a very good DSLR to start with. The kit lens is fine for you in the beginning to learn the camera and exposure/aperture/ISO, but ultimately you will want to move into the next level of lenses, like the 28-145 IS, or 17-85 IS, or the aftermarket ones from Sigma/Tamron. Your photographic needs will dictate what your lenses will have to be, nobody can really suggest the right lens for you until you know what situations you are having difficulties with.

In a nutshell, what you are considering is just fine for you, and the new price tag for that combination is in the $550-625 range online, through like Dell, etc.

The 18-55mm is the focal range of that lens, and that lens is considered a wideangle.

The 400D is a great entry-level DSLR. If you plan to stick to the photography styles that you listed then the 400D will work fine. But if you begin to venture into shooting sports, you may find the 400D a little on the inadequate side (although it can be done). The 18-55mm kit lens is a basic starter lens that can take good pictures. But as you begin to experiment with more expensive glass, you'll see a definite difference in IQ (image quality). Another camera you may want to look at is the 30D. They are going for really good prices now, around the $700 range. It can be used for all shooting styles which makes it a little more versatile IMO.

When it comes to IQ you will not see any difference. The difference is in the capabilities and features. As I mentioned, if you stay with the photo styles you listed then the 400D will work great. But if you step into the area of sports photography or anything that requires faster FPS then you'll wish you had went with the 30D. In this business it's better to have too much than not enough. But someone already said it; be sure you know what type of photography you are wanting to do before buying.
