So how many are really thinking of both these cameras? The 1DMKIII has been a nightmare and the D3 looks amazing! I have really thought of selling all my Canon gear to go to the dark side but you take a sh#* kicking! Seriously how many others have lost faith in Canon?

I have to say that the D3 looks pretty kick ass, but who knows really until they get their hands on one?

I mean who was looking at the mk III before it came out and saying it wasn't going to rock?

Dan - if you have a serious investment in Canon lenses, it's probably not worth shifting to Nikon, unless you have money to burn. After my problems with the quality of service that I received from Canon Australia earlier on in the year, I was mighty tempted to sell all my Canon gear and get a D2Xs and a single macro lens to suit, but decided against it, as the loss was going to be too great for me.

The D3 is by all accounts so far, an exceptionally good camera, delivering quality images. It's probably wise to wait and see it released into the wild and some 3rd party reviews hit the streets first though. Many Canonites are swearing that the D3 is shyte at high ISOs. And the new Nikon is being also bashed cos it's "only" 12mp. I still maintain that too many MPs are unnecessary. How on Earth did all those poor photographers ever live with Canon 1st and 2nd gen cameras that offered 8mp or less? Note the sarcasm in my voice ;)

Hey, tell you what! Sell all your Canon gear -- you'll only lose $1k or $2k of your investment in photography, and but Nikon gear, because they've finally maybe caught up to the 2 1/2 year 5D in IQ and have some cool features. Take some great pics!

Then in '08 when Canon puts out its next lines, sell all your Nikon gear at a loss and buy back into Canon! And post some pics!

If you are willing and able to jump from one thing to another, why not? I guess it can be fun!

Myself, I'm getting ready to grab the 1D Mk III because it does what I want. I'll keep my 5D, becuase it does what I want. I'll probably keep my 30D also for old times sake! Why not? And the cool thing is, not only do I not have to "sell all my Canon stuff", I don't have to sell anything! I think that's pretty fun myself.

But to everyone who sees the latest Nikon release and just has to dump their Canon stuff and have it, I figure more power to them, and the users on POTN who buy their Canon "junk" will bless them for it:)!

I personally think the nightmare is over with the MK 3. Mine is fabulous!! All said and done it was probably mostly firmware in the first place with a smattering of mirror problems but blown totally out of proportion on the net. Did you notice that the complaining has stopped? Read the thread on the new firmware. Everytime I think Nikon I look at the lens line and say to myself, no way. The equipment is great but the lens line is sparse as well as dated with partial screwdriver drive lenses. No 300 F4 is, no 400 5.6, no 100-400 is, no 70-200 F4 is, and the list goes on. The 80-400 doesn't compare in my mind.

I totally agree, I'm using a used 1DmkIII this weekend (shipped to me by mistake), on the recall list, I downloaded the firmware and BAM, this Camera ROCKS, I feel really bad for those who've owned one and have had problems. In my mind, i really don't mind if people think the mk3 is crap (I know different). .The new 1Dmk3's (finally) do what they are advertised as doing (at least the one I have)....As far as the D3 goes...I gotta tell you, that body looks to be a beast, but, I'm sticking with Canon, heck with any luck the 5DmkII will arrive with maybe 16MP's and I'll have two fricken amazing bodies. But, in the end, I wouldn't look at bodies as the reason to change systems anyways....it's the lenses you should be deciding on IMHO, if you like Nikons lenses (and a lot of people seem to) Then go for it. But Nikon is a huge company too and they're not gonna care about you or me anymore than Canon does.
I hope you make the right decision, if you don't, no big deal, just sell it all again and switch back, just remember, "The grass is always greener":):):)

I'm not pleased with the way Canon handled the Mk-III issues, but thats finally nearing an end. Its not enough to make me jump, though its enough to get me looking at Nikon.

I'm not convinced the D3 fill the full roll of the 1d. The D3 gets cropped a LOT for higher FPS. Also, I'm not excited by the D300's high ISO-noise. Not that it shows much noise, but the samples I've seen show a great deal of in-camera NR significantly impacting detail. If the D3 is anything like the D300, it won't compete with the 1d at all. The d3's full frame performance MAY be better than the 5d(a 3 year old design), but no where near the 1Ds in terms of detail(but maybe high-ISO).

Nope, I'm not yet convinced Nikon D3 would be an upgrade.

I would like to drop another variable into equation. Mark III has 7.2 um pixel pitch while D3 has 8.45, Canon 5D is 8.2 I think so D3 has pretty substantial advantage over mark III right from the start and if image processing is at least as good as canon I don't see any obstacles for it to have better high iso than mark III and canon 5D

You could be right, and I'd hope so for Nikon's sake.
But, do remember the 1d-III proved pitch isn't everything when it matched the 5d(or possibly bettered it) for high-ISO performance :)

I read that for the MkIII series Canon did some very serious engineering in efficiency areas so that their increase of pixel density would not adversely affect their low-noise IQ. If they've succeeded, in comparison to the 5D, well, that puts the 1D series and (hopefully) the upcoming 5Dx in a new class.

Give your head a shake, Danny boy.;)
Any new camera looks amazing in the marketing publications and during the introduction stage.
You just wait until some old hard core photogs who are not on Nikon payola, get hold of that D3.....then we'll get a better picture if that camera really rocks.

Incidentally, why have you "lost faith in Canon" ? Which expensive piece of gear in your collection has been letting you down ?

Did you forget how hany posts you made about the 1DMKIII?
Getting opinions like you were looking for earlier. ;)

Have you had your gear sent to Canon for repair? It's no fun and agrivating as many of us have experienced.
