I am shooting a Mark III with an 8gig card, shooting RAW, which would be about 13 megbytes per picture. On an 8gig card that comes out to somewhere around 615 pictures on the card, give or take. My display shows 461 for a camera formated card with no pictures on it. Just formatted it. Is this correct? Am I figuring something wrong?:D Adrian

Well, I don't use anything bigger than a 4GB card, and with my MkIII it shows 251 exposures available.

I think the camera estimates conservatively and you will usually get more than what the counter displays. That is my experience anyway, but I'm only using 2GB cards. Also, if you look when you format it, an 8GB card doesn't actually have 8GB worth of storage space.

I think the acutal memory is 7.61 gig which translates into about 580 pictures based on the math but probably not based on reality.

ISO settings and other factors come into play. The higher ISO, the less pictures. I always use an 8gb Sandisk Extreme IV, and on my Mark III I believe it shows 530 pics or so, and that's probably pretty close to accurate.

My 1Ds Mk II always shows 461 on a newly formatted 8GB card - however shooting today I took 518 RAW images on it.

It always seems to err on the side of caution.

Don't go by the counter until it's get under 100 or so. You'll get 615 and more raws.

Number of shots is going to depend on ISO and amount of detail in the picture. RAW is a lossless compression format; detail or noise makes it compress less well. Aircraft in a clear blue sky=lots of shots. Group portrait of schoolkids all wearing their own thing=lots of detail=nowhere near as many shots. The frame counter assumes a "standard" file size - see your specs for how big at ISO 100 - and continually updates based on how much room is left, not on how big the last shot was.
