I have a Sigma 70-300 APO DG which gives good results with 5D. I am attracted to the Canon EF 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 IS USM for the image stability, and I understand the IQ is better than the Sigma. With the moderate price and current cash back offer I am tempted to move - I would welcome opinions/comments from owners on this.

Canon 24-105 L IS USM,
Canon 400mm L f5.6
Canon 7D, Canon 1.4 TCII
Canon 10-22, Canon 420EX speedlite,

Olympus OMD EM5, 20-40 f2.8 PRO

The 70-300IS does have superior IQ to the 70-300 APO DG.

Pros:

1. versatile
2. great IS
3. very reliable focusing
4. Very good IQ, just a hair less sharp than 70-200F4, touch less saturation

Cons:

1. build quality
2. no full USM
3. slow at the long end

Do you use the macro capabilities of the Sigma?
In my opinion an area where the sigma is better than the Canon 70-300.

Personally I'd go for it. The Canon 70-300 is a great performer optically and I find the IS feature to be of great value on a long, slow telezoom.

I use a Canon 5DIII and a Sony A7rIII

Yeah, great value lens at the moment and very practical with the IS. Had both and is a worthy upgrade over the Sigma.

I sometimes use the Macro function, but probably only about 10 per cent of the time. The overall IQ and IS of the Canon would swing me towards a change.

The macro side of the Sigma is NO reason to keep it at all, the 70-300IS with kenko tubes is amazing, ive put it up against a dedicated macro lens & it was just as sharp, even at the borders, with IS it makes an even better macro setup.

The 70-300IS is superior in many ways, I would go for it.

Nothing has all that range and IS in such an affordable package. Great lens.

If you must know...

Pulling in extra tubes is cheating
I agree that overall the 70-300IS outperforms the Sigma, I also switched.

Thanks to all who responded. The feedback is 100% in favour of the Canon. This confirms what I had already heard, so that's my Chtistmas present to myself sorted!

You won't regret it. I switched from the Sigma to the Canon and it's a world of difference.
