Hey guys...PLEASE HELP ME! I have posted two pics here for you to comment on, I know that they are crap!:o I need advice on what I should do to hopefully improve. I would love to be able to one day take photos like you guys have all posted here. Your shots all look awesome.
I shot these with my 40D, 24-70L, 430EX hand-held, in P mode on the dial (Program). The lighting kinda sucks in this club and I can't do much about that. I can use my flash as much as I want there. Also I now know that I shouldnt shoot in Program mode so I wont, Ive been trying to use Manual mode alot more. Anyway, take a peek at them and give me your 2 cents worth. EXIF date is there.
Thanks a million for your help........

Okay, I will read more, and thank you so much:D. Just out of curiousity though, what would be a good starting point for my camera settings to start off with in this situation? f/4, shutter speed 1/60, ISO 400......?

you pics have a lot of nothing going no in the void space. The 1st picture doesn't have a dominate subject or convey any meaning. The 2nd would be better if it was cropped a bit more toward the girl and the guy on the lower right hand corner. I'd say bump the ISO to 640-800 for shots like these.

Thanks for your advice. To be honest in these photos I was just pointing and shooting at nothing in particular just because I wanted to see how they would come out as far as exposure. Then for the next time I could try something different. Thanks again.

its so hard to just give you a random setting mainly because every venue is different. but read up on dragging the shutter, that is your first step.

BTW.these were at ISO 800. Maybe its just crappy because I shot in Program?

If I'm shooting with my 430ex, I'd just shoot at ISO800, f/4 and at 1/5-1/40 shutter speed. Also depends on how dark the room is. But then again, I also have the ghost busters and I could be shooting at ISO100 f/11 at 1/125.

Would you recommend using AI Servo, and Center point focus also?

The way I started learning how to drag the shutter was to set the camera ISO to 800, and put it in P-mode. LOOK AT THE SETTINGS and remember the Aperture setting. Next drop the shutter speed down a half or more to suit. (if it was 1/60th, go 1/20th or slower)

***and play with it from there***
and like Turbo says go through the thread and read. Start at pg.1...by the time you get to 75, you should be straight! lol

Also I should have mentioned that I was bouncing the flash off of the ceiling. Do you think it would help if I faced it forward directly? I use a Stofen, or a Gary Fong. I have both.
