past friday night at Circa Nightclub, in the Mirror Ballroom

this time round, i just put on a glossy cue-card and i didn't adjust the flash ... in terms of twisting and such, i left it at a relative angle and shot ... didn't come out as well as i hoped ... and there's a couple where i tried pointing the flash down on the ground :S not so much

i really want to try the offshoe cord

How'd you pull off that lighting. I've tried takin photos in clubs before, and they don't turn out looking anywhere near as good as that.

Right, I will be starting work at a club on the weekend and haven’t had the chance to test this at the moment. I will be shooting with my 400D, 430ex (with a stofen optional) with either the kit lens or my Sigma 24-70 1:2.8.

The scenario is that after an evening of shooting, the memory card will be handed to the club owner so he can upload the pictures.

Now my query is that I will be shooting in JPEG so there will be no post processing after I shoot. I will be shooting between ISO800-1600, f/2.8. As there will be no post processing taking place, noise will be present on the pictures. Would it be more suitable to shoot on JPEG large, medium or small to help reduce this?

I would assume that using a smaller res, the amount of noise should be reduced but would like the advice of you wonderful POTN’ers.

Thanks

Thanks Dwight - I flirt with them a lot, talk to them, make them laugh etc. Whatever it takes to break that "ICE" They would want to pose for me vs me asking them to do it.

I feel part of any photographers job is to be really social (depending on where you are of course) The more comfortable the client is with you, the better the picture will come out.

Nevertheless! Come out to the bay buddy! :)

If at all possible, hand them the pictures the next day. Granted, you CAN give them the pictures right out of the camera but if you can do even just a little bit of PP, then they will appreciate your work that much more. Personally, I usually shoot at f8 and ISO 400 with my 580ex. It just depends on the look you're going for.

Your pictures are amazing. I really like the colors of your pictures. Do you bounce the flash, use a bounce card or point the flash directly at them?

It's a good day if I'm looking down at the grass and not up at the roots.

I point the flash directly at them. I either use the 17-85mm IS or the 50mm 1.4 when I'm at the club. If you go to my site ( www.JS4KIKZ.com (external link) ) you'll see a whole gallery of pictures from the nightclubs I work at.
Also, the ceilings are way to high for me to bounce the flash. All of 2007 are with the 20D.

Hey guys great thread glad i found it...
I was at a club this weekend and the guy working it had a flash that allowed him to flip it on like a lamp then off and take the shot. I think he was shooting with a Nikon. What flashes have this feature? Also any more tips on focusing ive gotten good at MF doing my Band photography but would like to rely on the AF more...
