Agreed. The dude in the mouse head is pretty funny.

Well that depends. If you had read through you may have noticed a couple pages of discussion regarding that very question.

It boils down to how wide will you need to go and how much do you need to zoom?

In the average nightclub I doubt you will get much use out of a 70-200, unless you just want to take pictures of people's heads or body parts as I don't think you will have the distance to get a person's whole body in frame much less groups of people.

Some feel the 24-70 isn't wide enough and that again will depend on how much distance you have and what kind of shots you want to do.

I think the general consensus is that you will find more use from the 17-40 in most nightclub situations.

Also I'm not entirely sure you want to be hauling a bunch of extra lenses around.

Agreed about carrying so many lenses around. I guess on APS-C, the 17-40 should be adequate. I just always want to be prepared, ya know? :P I wonder if i should stick my 50/1.4 in my pocket, "just in case." Obviously this is my first time shooting a venue of this nature, plus i'm getting paid for it, so...ya know. :) Thanks again for the reply!

Might be a good idea but you will probably never use it.

Another thing to consider that, especially in a crowded club, the further away from your subject or subjects you are the more likely you will have people getting in the way or messing up the shot in some form or fashion.

taking a 50 1.4 is a good idea, its no more heavier than a set of batteries.

I was thinking about getting a 50/1.4 for shooting low light photography, mainly for it's shallow DOF to isolate subjects. Anybody here using that lens? I also have the great 24-70L, but 2.8 doesn't quite get that nice DOF.

i have that lens but i dont use it in a nightclub. I use my 70-200 and my 24-60 exclusively. Only if its a major event too. Other wise its the 24-60 all the way, however im in the market for a 24-105L to see if that would help me out in the versatility range

Ah ok thanks.
I am shooting a fundraiser at a nightclub next week, and not sure what to expect. Actually, I think this is before prime hours, and normal lights will be on. But I just love the magical look of shallow dof primes.

THanks again for the feedback!

:( I really want to go to raves and techno/dance/house parties. There's nothing here in NC, maybe dance/house music for only special parties but that's like 1-2 times only in the fall. Need to get out of NC. Really want to go to Dublin or any place in Europe for parties :(

I may go out to Cali for AMA and MotoGP this year. Might get my credentials through AP.
