This is where Manual mode will do nothing for you... Thats right i said it... To heck with manual mode in direct sunlight. You are gonna want the "fill flash" feature with the Av and tv modes. In Manual flash compensates for the whole exposure. So here is what i do... Av mode. set at 4.0 - 5.6 (depending on DOF), underexpose by 1/3 or 2/3 of a stop ambient, and +1/3 for FEC, in AVERAGE ttl. You dont want to kill the shadows completely cuz it will look kinda fake. You just have to fill them in a bit. USE BARE FLASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I REPEAT BARE DIRECT FLASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Going through this thread start to finish...a valuable resource. Not bad... Personally I think it needs a bit more ambient or color saturation. As far as bouncing your flash, you need to be close enough for it to work or you will have the problems you had. Also consider the lumiquest pocket bouncer to help you if you don't have a nearby white ceiling.
Taken with the nifty fifty at about 40 feet away - I think direct flash - 1/4 shutter/f1.8 (not sure I like the colors but another example of a distant shot):
I was closer for this one - probably within 10 feet. Taken with kit 18-55 - 1/4 sec shutter/f5.6:

Lol, I don't think she can sue you... at least not and win. Most people don't realize but when they enter a business such as a nightclub they don't have much of a say on if their picture is taken or not (especially if the club owner has given you permission). Much like you could take a picture of them outside on public property without them being able to "sue" you.

Hey, what setting are you using on the flash? I ask because on some photos, especially #7, the face looks really golden and burnt out a bit.
