LOL. its not as easy as it seems huh.... :)

Ok here you go. This is where Manual mode will do nothing for you... Thats right i said it... To heck with manual mode in direct sunlight. You are gonna want the "fill flash" feature with the Av and tv modes. In Manual flash compensates for the whole exposure.

So here is what i do... Av mode. set at 4.0 - 5.6 (depending on DOF), underexpose by 1/3 or 2/3 of a stop ambient, and +1/3 for FEC, in AVERAGE ttl. You dont want to kill the shadows completely cuz it will look kinda fake. You just have to fill them in a bit.

USE BARE FLASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I REPEAT BARE DIRECT FLASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Going through this thread start to finish...a valuable resource.
Hope you don't mind me asking questions that refer to somewhat old posts :)

Turbodude, would you mind elaborating the above?
Do you mean AV mode, evaluative metering, -1/3 to 2/3 stop EC and +1/3 FEC or...?

Thanks!

I saw Digitalism (live set) last year at Firestone in Orlando, FL. The greatest thing ever!!! Well that was until i saw Pendulum (live set) 5 months ago.

matt reeves is the bomb, i like his stuff.

Being a douche to people sucks, however i must admit i have been one to on certain occasions. But not for a visiting photog. But a visiting photog that asks me every little question and follows me around shooting teh same people i do for 2 hours. and trying to take a pic of me taking a pic like 30 times, Basically ruining my picture because i use a really slow shutter speed, so every pic is washed out. ARGH!!!

ok end rant.

Maybe that guy was just having a bad night. We all have them. Im the nicest guy in teh world and will talk your ear off most of the time about photography. But some nights are just bad nights where i just want to get in and out.

i took the camera out last night to a few pubs and a friend of mine's band. i did struggle a bit controlling the flash. origianlly i was shooting at 45 degrees but found massive lower shadowing on the photos, so i ended up going front on. i didnt have a stofen and didnt use the bounce cards i made up. everythign was just go, go, go. didnt have time to think. just kept taking pics and altering my settings. also trying different modes. i generally like to shoot in full manual.

keep in mind ive had this camera for 4 days and this is the first time ive had it out at night. im fairly happy with the results but some photos were washed out and required alot of pp.

but i met alot of really cool people willingto help me out. i met a marketing agent for a host of metal bands in adelaide and she is going to try and get me some work.

Not bad... Personally I think it needs a bit more ambient or color saturation. As far as bouncing your flash, you need to be close enough for it to work or you will have the problems you had. Also consider the lumiquest pocket bouncer to help you if you don't have a nearby white ceiling.

If you are too far then you may not have a choice but to use direct flash... if so try slower shutter speeds.

As far as time... you had the time to stick on a bounce card...doesn't take more than a 10 to 20 seconds. Put it on before you get there if you feel rushed.

Renee/Dwight/and I think Chris have some good band/concert stuff.

Here are some of mine:

.1sec / f5.0/70mm/iso100 - about 40 feet back (not great just an example of a somewhat distant shot):

Taken with the nifty fifty at about 40 feet away - I think direct flash - 1/4 shutter/f1.8 (not sure I like the colors but another example of a distant shot):

I was closer for this one - probably within 10 feet. Taken with kit 18-55 - 1/4 sec shutter/f5.6:

and now one of my favorite bands Dot Dot Dot:

thanks for the advice champ. im still need to learn how to get the most out of my photos through pp.

im going to some clubs soon to try there. thought id start in an enviroment that i was more comfortable in and knew alot of the people there.

although most of my friends arent that camera friendly hahaha.

i had alot of people aproach me last night asking if i was with any particualr paper or media distribution.

i was straight forward withe them and told them i was learning how to use my camera. i was expecting to be told to put it away hahaha. one woman asked me to delete her photo or she would sue me. even though i was taking a picture of a friend and not her but she was in the shot. i kindly deleted the photo and took another one of my mate.

Lol, I don't think she can sue you... at least not and win. Most people don't realize but when they enter a business such as a nightclub they don't have much of a say on if their picture is taken or not (especially if the club owner has given you permission). Much like you could take a picture of them outside on public property without them being able to "sue" you.

I get asked a bunch who I am shooting for and since I am there at the owner's bequest I just say I am shooting for the owner.

You could probably play with the levels a bit more on the pics you posted to get them to brighten up a bit. In anycase you are off to a good start.

Here's one, a former regular on this thread, Adsayer liked (he moved into the boonies where there are very few clubs - all of his work though is pretty good and can be found at: HERE (external link) - for you guys who wondered where he went that is his flickr page - check it out and say hi ):

Hey, what setting are you using on the flash? I ask because on some photos, especially #7, the face looks really golden and burnt out a bit.

Number #1 is great by the way!
