had some fun last night and went to guv for yoji. borrowed a freinds canon sd1100 p&s. nothing really to say about it besides the high level of noise after iso400 but that's expected, especially in a dark environment. the manual mode is really limited which is a shame. but i guess that's why there's CHDK.

anyway, here are some shots.

Jason,

They still ask for 1800 x 1200? For that online printing program they wanted to, and never will, implement?

Just upload at 640 x whatever and I doubt they'll notice.

hmm maybe i will start doing that next weekend. save myself some bandwidth. lol.

I need some help here you guys:

Although I enjoy doing the whole nightclub/party thing, I really want to move onto other projects which involve shooting female models. I know that some of you have had luck shooting models but for some reason here in Tampa, a lot of the models that I have been trying to work with flake out. I gave up on searching on Craigslist because of that guy in Boston killing that girl he met on Craigslist and models are really hard to come by. Also, one thing that I am finding out is that if a girl knows that she is not going to be on Maxim or whatever then she's not going to do it.

Any advice in this matter will be greatly appreciated. Thanks:D

shred, just want to point this out here, you have some nice images but honestly, you should use the diagonal composition more sparingly as in some of them look worse with that framing. Your lighting looks spot on, just don't carried away with shooting with one shoe on (happy gilmore reference).

Twin Turbo, the best way to get models to shoot for you is to show them that you have talent that they want to work with, this means having a portfolio. Even if you are starting out, the best thing to do is annoy your girlfriend, sister, other family members, friends, friend's girlfriends and if you go to school, classmates. They don't have to be glamour shots, just like headshots and casual/dresswear to show that you understand lighting and present your own unique techniques in what you can capture.

Finding models after that is really about networking and showing your "proof of work". Model sites like Model Mayhem or OMP area good place to find TFP models, but a lot of the good ones will request payment. I would recommend on going in with a friend to hire a pro model so they know what to do, then shoot amateur girls. Another good way is to attend model workshops, I know OMP does a lot of them in many major cities all the time. Cost depends on number of photographers, models, and the class of models or even the type of shoot.

Another way is to go out to fashion shows and ask the models there if they'd do TFP work and hand them a card. You could probably hand out a dozen or two and have one or two call back with interest.

I never do anything with craigslist in terms of finding models. I just post my work and portfolio stuff on modeling sites and generally work with models who contact first. Having some sort of credibility also goes a long way since I do a lot of editorial work in my local area, so if you work for a local magazine, make sure your models know it. :)

Sorry to quote this whole thing but JBaz is correcto on all points. As for the models, my experience is that all but the professionals are flaky and so are the MUAs ... it's like they are little girls playing at a sleepover where everything is pretend and changing your mind at the last second and not taking responsibility for saying so is of no consequence ... I don't think I've had one ModelMayhem model or MUA work out.

rizzo 123.

I see a few bits of your work are on resident advisor. Do you get paid by them? or are they another example of tillate/DSI where they pay to tog nothing.

RA seem to be a better site to me overall and id pondered speaking to them as i shoot london so often but not approaching another freebie company

I don't want to make an assumption, but this one girl I know did some stuff for them, and I think unless you're local to their home (AU) they don't pay, they just vouch for you to get into events or something.

That is the way it was with her at least. She was pissy that they flat out refused to pay and was asking me for a job. Which unfortunately I couldn't provide since we just have enough to take care of ourselves.

Again, I'm not sure though since I've seen some decent stuff on there and it's hard to believe that people who can produce decent stuff would just give it away.

In Poland we have a site called maxmodels which unites together photographers, make up wannabes and models. You contact a model from your city (in her profile she has what kind of pictures she can be part of, even nude), after that you both find a person that will take care of the make up and thats all. Mostly all of them are students of cosmetology or stuff like that who seek some experience cause they wanna do it as a pro some day. Maybe you have a site like that in your country? My friend takes part in it as a make up artist and she has a trully great portfolio :).
The girl after the shoot and the make up girl/guy receive photos to add to their portfolio. I think it's a even deal.

I've actually been using facebook more and more to book model shoots because more than often, when I post a new series of photos of a beautiful model, every single one of her friends will see them when tagged so you basically open the door to 10 more beautiful potential clients.

I actually shot this one really cute Russian girl two years ago after meeting her at a fashion show that I hosted at my College (I went to Textiles School, don't hate... lol); made some really cool images, then basically everyone of her Russian friends want to work with me. Even this weekend I shot another girl of whom saw my work through friends of friends who I took pics of when they were out at clubs like back in Janurary.

It also helps to party with Models and cheerleaders every other weekend too and when people see you and ask you who you are, other people in the room go "Come on, its JBaz!". :p

There's one here called Model Mayhem.

What you're referring to here is called TFCD, which is generally frowned upon. TFCD (Time for CD - you shoot her and give her a disc of the image) in my opinion does more harm than good. While we can't all ask for $5000/day or whatever, I've always felt some financial compensation is necessary for any photographic work performed, even if it's a little at first.
