This thread inspired me to scout some local nightclubs here in DC and got a gig this friday. I got a question though, what type of gear do you guys bring? This may be obvious to you guys but this is going to be new to me but I'm thinking of bringing just a 17-55mm f/2.8 and a flash.

With that said, do you guys bring your bag as well?

Keep it simple. The lens is fine (if prone to failure from repeated bumping common in clubs) since it is wide and somewhat fast.

If you have a local camera shop, pick up an ST-E2 or off-camera shoe cord and experiment.

honestly if clubs in DC are half as wild as they are in NYC, bringing a bag with extra equipment is not such a good idea, it gets hot it gets crowded and hard for you to move around if you keep the bag on you, if you place it down you run the risk of getting your gear stolen or lost....IMO pick your widest and fastest lense....i think the 17-55 2.8 is the lense of choice for many on here....a flash is a must....put that sucker into second curtain sync, shoot in BULB and you should be good to go....ohh wait, dial down your flash to 1/2 - 1/4 otherwise you will have blown out skin tones....good luck;)

Quick question - would most of you leave the flash setting on Evaluative or Average?
I find I get more consistent shots with the Average setting - however the Evaluative setting gives me more of a 'flow' of the setting. Only problem with this setting is the trails of light can sometimes obscure people's faces.

Opinions?

I have the 17-55 2.8....question...this weekend i noticed after I lock in on the subject, I have to hold my shutter button rather long for the camera to fire....lens issue or camera issue? Also im using a st-e2

Been trying to mix it up to keep from losing interest. Been using Primes to push my creativity, and taping down zooms to make them primes, and sometimes even shutting off the FLASH!!! I know Pod_Canon loves to hear that lol.

TD, you're my boy!

Leftovers from my lighting days. I probably mentioned it too many times before, but I did lighting before I got into nightlife shooting and I was always like "well, i've got these wonderful lights here, let's use 'em!"

Of course making my subjects cook sucked a bit. But then the humble LED came to the rescue.

I would die for a multi-color "flash" that used LEDs. No more xenon lamps and just a "flash" of high intensity LED light in your choice of 16.8 million colors!

I think with DSLRs adding video this will become a reality. Now, if you want to light your subject, you have to carry a flash and a continuous light source.

Oh, and that photo of Steve is most excellent. Amazing DJ and a great guy.
