hey if you're talking about DOF effect, you'll get that best when there's lots of distance between the subject and the background, and also at speeds of 2.8 or faster. At 5.0 it will be tough to get a good blur effect. If you really want to get some nice blur pickup one of the 1.8 or 1.4 lenses.

thanks, i guess i'll dial it to 2.8 tonight and give it a go.

if you've never shot at 2.8 or faster in the club before, there is a learning curve IMO, don't be discouraged if your shots aren't coming out how you'd like. The faster speeds give best color with lots of ambient color lighting (if you are going for that look) - experiment with ISO around 500-800 or so along with shutter speed 1/15-1/70 or so (depending on light). Flash positioning and power is also very important to get a properly exposed and balanced shot - experiment with your setup to see what gives you the best result. Once you have found something that works, save it to your memory setting or write it down or whatever works for you - good luck.

Hi everyone,

I've been lurking around these parts for a little while (usually shooting bands so I'm generally found in PA section) however I decided to bite the bullet and get in touch with the promoter of Sydney alt.metal club, Blink to offer my services as club photographer.

I'll be "officially" starting in a few weeks time but I figured I should head in and get familiar with the lighting and crowd and take a few test shots, as whilst I've been there heaps of times before, I never paid too much attention to the technical details!

My personal opinion is that I'm really happy with how the shots turned out, and I was surprised with the consistency of the "portrait" shots... EXIF for all should be 50D on ISO 640, 0"4 shutter, f5.0 @ around 24mm with 430ex on camera with omni-bounce, set at 1/16, 2nd curtain and firing straight ahead.

Next thing I need is definitely a wider angle lens... a 10-22 I think would do the trick nicely!

Anyway, enough talk... here's the results (C&C most definitely welcome!):

Beautiful club. One of our client venues. It's the "it" club at the moment, which, Miami being what it is, means you stand a fair chance of waiting a long time to get in.

Definitely worth a look though for the visual spectacle.
