So what's the secret to using a flash and getting such vivid color, and perfect exposure in these clubs? You guys make these shots look amazing! (the subjects have something to do with it too ; ) I shoot my sisters band often, and NEVER use a flash. But from time to time I would like to use one to get the whole band in one shot. Problem is, every time I do, It looks like someone turned the lights on. It really takes away from the feel of how it really looks. Any pointers would be appreciated.

1. Jennifer Love Hewitt is amazing and fun. Everytime i see her and chat with her, i always think about how i used to watch "Cant Hardly Wait" and think damn she is ****in hot.

hey guys,

sorry to bust in here with one set of pics and then expect you all to run to my aid answering stupid questions...

I did my first club shoot on friday night (with my 24-70 f2.8 on 50D) the one thing that I noticed was that with the crop body the 24mm was a bit too long to get decent shots of more than head and shoulders... I've found a Tokina 10-17mm fisheye on ebay here which ends tomorrow and its so far around the AUD$600 mark, which is a good price. I should point out that I was using the 24-70 @ around f5.0 anyway with flash so speed isn't a concern when considering the fisheye.

Does anyone else regularly use a fisheye for club stuff, and would you recommend it?

The rest of my gallery is on my flickr here:

Fisheye is handy for "that effect" but not for what one would consider a proper portrait of sorts.

As far as the limited utility of the 24-70? Well, I used to use a 28-135, and I simply backed up some more or repositioned people.

That's what I like to hear. Right now I'm using my Sigma 18-55 f/2.8 when I shoot concerts and was thinking about trying the 28-135 for upcoming ones.

Yeah, a good standard to the "beginning" of the tele range is good for some concert situations.

For full frame, its great to have, but you have to have a good eye or it won't work well. For epic crowd stuff and the like, its usually OK to go a bit crazy, but whenever the subject is pretty close, you have to work the shot so the distortion looks like part of the image, instead of sticking out like a sore thumb. Also looks pretty cheezy if more than a handful of images in a gallery use it.

So Al, if you need an assistant/2nd shooter anywhere from the 15th-17th I'll be in town! I'd love to learn a thing or two! I'll be in town covering the National Professional Paintball League event during the day... need something to do at night!

^^^Truth!

There are few people who's fisheye photos I've really liked in clubs. Ruke's epic crowd shots are definitely the creme of the crop. Ceasar Sebastian does a great job with his, but not sure if it's a 15mm fishy or just really wide. Either way they can be effective, but get really stale used 100% of the time.

Mine are no-where near their level... but here are some crowd shots:

IMAGE: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3493/3803863685_fa6ae44e0f.jpg
IMAGE: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3425/3803858647_a9550bf899.jpg

I'm a big fan of the fisheye effect for portraiture (in moderation). I don't mind BIG distortion with the guys... but I don't usually use it for women. My wife HATES my fisheye lens, mostly because women don't usually like everything about their faces as they are... let alone in BIG HEAD MODE! So keep it light.

IMAGE: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2539/3803862995_49ef0ea7b1.jpg

It does come in handy for sports as well:
IMAGE: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3483/3773650093_10020d2763_o.jpg

To answer the OP, IMO my 8mm Peleng is a creative/fun lens. Not an everyshot lens. I like to think that I'd get some good mileage with the 10-17mm as long as the long end wasn't too distorted. I usually only use the 17mm side of my 17-35 in clubs.
