Anyone have personal experience with the Sigma 30mm 1.4 in a club environment? I want this to be my next lens purchase, but not sure if it's going to give me the crispness I'm looking for.

Thoughts? Ideas? Prom dress?

^---- Are you serious?

I'm very familiar with the lens itself.... my question (and thanks for not reading it at all, apparently) was if anyone has experience using it IN A CLUB environment.

No need to be a douche.

I had my 20d stolen with a whole bunch of lenes etc now they are going to replace it with a 50d which is choice !!!! but here is my problem i do alot of different types of photography but most of my stuff is music mostly nightclub and concerts in very low low low light !! I managed to get good shots with my 20d but it was hard but now i have the 3 options

1, do i keep the 50d and get more lenses
2,spend a little bit more and get the 7d and maybe a couple of extra lenses
3, spend more and get the 5dmkii and use the lenses that get replaced ?

i like the 7d and 5dmkii but i havent really seen many decent low low light shots with the 7d but i have seen heaps with the 5dmkii and i love it i dont use flash most of the time for my concert shots !!!!

Please i need help im really stuck !!!

Thanks

sam

Is it our favorite site to beat on from Europe?

The funny thing is, when you have a "homemade" pass from your site like that, it makes you look like you're trying to look official, i.e. you don't really have authorization so you put a fancy pass around your neck.

Yep very big favourite to beat on lol...

like i say ive had a few waving their little laminated bits of paper at me like they were allowed to do as they please, even though they didnt have the accrediation from the event promoter themselves

the 50D is streaks ahead of the 20D, so if you managed with the 20D maybe not write off the 50 just yet.

In the UK quite a few people have moved to 7Ds who were on things like 400Ds i know and their pics have got better, helped by things like the auto iso.

I wouldnt get the 5d mkII if you want to use the body for anything needing good AF tracking, I shoot sports which is why i ruled it out even though the iso performance is very very good.

Look at what lenses you use all the time. Buy those, and whichever body you can afford after the lenses. All of those bodies are fine for low light. Even more so if you don't freak out over noise like a lot of people do. It's gonna be quite some time before ISO 6400 has the noise level of ISO 100, so in the meantime, embrace the noise as part of life.

As for the "occasional" lenses? Rent. It's what I do. I specifically own a small amount of lenses. I'm not going to lay out $2000+ for something I use once a month. Unless that once-a-month usage gets me $2000+, of course.

I do hate noise mainly if the band is using them for pro or album work but I love the images with the 5dmkii but sometimes i like to do some faster fps !!

That's well within what I consider acceptable noise, whether you did post on them or not.

BG, if the band is going to use them on their albums, they're gonna be blown up to 5" x 5" at the most, excepting for things like ads. And with the way printing presses are, the halftone "effect" actually suppresses a lot of the noise. On my desk here I have an CD album where most of the inside photos are ISO 1600 on a 30D.

With the nature of concert and club lighting, you're pretty much forced into the realm of ISO 1600 and up unless you're popping your flash. The three cameras you mentioned are wonderful up to 3200, and you can "deal" with it up to 6400. 12800, at least on the 50D, is there "just because". I can't get usable images at that point.

12,800 on the 7d is usable after a slight NR in post. I don't have any up nor have I ever printed but I have taken them around the house in pitch black... just because.

the way i see it is, if it sparks my interest in a positive way, and i feel its solid enough to display, i feel its justified....

Very nice Chris. Makes me miss shooting nightlife! I think I'm going to dust it off in a REALLY small bar/club that my brother is DJ'ing at this next week. Going to give a buddy of mine some pointers. Hope you all have been well!

Hmm, interesting. A friend has a 7D, I may experiment. I may try with my 50 too. It looked like heck but I didn't really mess around with it. I remember I used to say the same about 3200 on my 30D until I got a technique down.
