A friend asked me to help him shoot at a local club over the weekend. This was my first time shooting in very low light conditions. I didn't have a wide lens so I borrowed a kit 18-55 lens. I have a 430ex to help me out.

I noticed myself having to AF the lens then manually focus it to make it sharper otherwise all I'd get is blur. I was shooting around f/4.0-6.3, ISO800, 1/4sec. It seemed that I couldn't go any faster with the shutter because all I would see was a dark LCD afterwards.

My question is, would it have helped me to have a faster lens (i.e. 17-55 2.8 ) for better low light focusing or was I doing something wrong? I'm thinking of maybe renting one for next time.

thanks

Where were you pointing the flash? All shutter speed does when flash is involved is affect ambient, Flash is only subject to aperture and in extreme cases ISO.

Flash was straight up. Some shots I used the "hand reflector" trick to get a better tone.

@Solo87

I would really really recommend reading this thread at P.1 until you get back to here.

All the tips, tricks, settings, examples, I have ever used for this I have gotten from here. It is a gold mine of information through this thread. It will take a while to read etc (I was ill for a week and a half, so had the time), but I would never have gotten the results without a huge amount of trial and error otherwise.

Hope it helps dude, but the effort is 110% worth it!

J

So i am seriously debating on making the switch from Nikon to Canon. For various reasons, some being
1.More lens options
2.Hd video...nikon is getting its ASSED kicked, with only having the d90 (720p) and the d300s (1080 i believe)
3.Just more options.

Anyhow I am going to start dabbling in Video, and was thinking about buying the Canon EOS 550D
Anyone have any feedback?

As well... I still want to do photos as well...so i would be selling my Nikon Collection.
Can anyone recommend a good Canon camera between $400-$1,000 price range?
Im currently shooting with a Nikon d40 (nothing amazing...)
so something that can at least match it.

As well...something decent with 1600iso at least lol

thank u guys in advance. You are awesome! =]

Thanks Jim. I'm slowly but surely working my way through the pages. I just didn't know if a non-kit lens would perform better in low light environments with the AF.

I need to take a couple days off to finish this thread.

I just switched from the 40D to the 550D. Haven't looked back. Video is INSANE (studio quality with the right lenses). Picture quality is superb. ISO 1600 is smooth as butter. Plus it's light-weight. I like it a lot :)

Can you recommend a few lens's by any chance?
im thinking right now of keeping my current nikon rig FOR PHOTOS...and get the 550D for video. I kno the obvious thing is to have all of the same product, but that camera, i would REALLY be using for video ONLY, and switch back and forth from video/photo. So i wouldn't really be switching and swapping out lens....as well its a bit easier on the pocketbook =p

Hmmm... I'm sure the Tamron 17-50 would be good. Any primes are amazing for video (sigma 30mm)

I use my 70-200 for video when space will allow. Video quality is amazing. I'd say for club stuff, the 17-40 L probably wouldn't be too bad if you can afford it...plus it would be a lot sturdier. But I digress..
