I always deliver my best, since it's my name on the product.

Where I "cut" if someone is paying less is on things like turnaround time and "shooting direction". I kind of shoot what I want anyways, but if you're gonna be specific, the rate goes way up. I also turn things around slower.

Hey - I was just thinking about this - a few photographers seem to have expressed similar sentiment, would it be possible to deliver a product more worthy of the money that you're getting?

that is to say - if you're being paid less than you should for the quality of the photos, can you shoot suitably lower quality photos?

Like take a canon G9/10 into a club with flash, and shoot for an hour-ish, then go out and get coffee, and an hour or 2 later, go back and get the another hour's worth of shots?

That way you're getting paid, but you're not stressing about getting your camera/gear broken for the whole night, and delivering a product better suited to the price bracket that you're being paid for.

is there a volume agreement or a time agreement or what? - my other thoughts are - DJ's won't be paying for photos of themselves off the club's website, - but people do pay for photos of themselves/friends.

my 2 cents.

Thing is, I really do not like to gamble with the quality of my photos since my name is on them.

It's sort of a complicated issue. They wanted for me to shoot more events but for less money and it's not like I can be there for like an hour then go off somewhere and come back and shoot some more. It would be way too much work on my end with little pay, specially with post work and all. Plus, I am getting the feeling that I am being "directed" to take certain types of shots and I just can't do that:confused:

I only do one or two events a night, max. Even during Conference week.

so,

doing my daily facebook rounds, I noticed a post with a photo that looked rather familiar.

http://track.aimsemailmarketing.com …a61bed0b9abbea5209e0fb1f0 (external link)

(photo at the top is mine, aggro santos performing live)
the club very kindly used my photo, and chopped off my watermarking, without even asking.

this club don't pay for us, or the photos. we go there because it has the biggest capacity, and an awesome atmosphere..

I think it was highly rude of them to do that.

thoughts?

Alot will do it and not care, ive had ticketmaster do one on me with an image and then fob me off and not respond to further correspondance.

Id not get moody, espec if you make good £££ off the punters in that venue, as they can easily turn round and say fine no entry in future.

Just simply ask them why they have used an image without permission and cropped it off.

DJs do that to me ALL THE TIME. I've clearly watermarked my photos, then they go out of their way to crop off the watermark and post them all over their facebook/myspace/whatever with absolutely no credit. People who don't know anything about photography see a picture as a picture. They don't realize there is actually work that goes into it. The respect just isn't there a lot of the time.

On a side note: Shea, are you going to tell us yet how you guys do those multiple exposures? It's making my brain hurt.

I am a huge stickler when It comes to people stealing my photos, If I catch people doing it I'll either demand to be paid or have the fliers destroyed. As for that exposure effect, well lol I have to keep some secretes, but I will say it took FOREVER to learn to do it right. I found it to be really difficult to do well/right :)

True. If I see it in print, I'll make an issue of it, of course. Especially if it's from the web and noticeably up-rezzed.

On a website itself? Depends. I'll kindly ask for a takedown, or money. The funny thing was, a friend of mine, who is one of the town's top designers, used an image of mine as a placeholder, and left it up. Now, it had something to do with the site in question, and I asked the owner to take it down as I wasn't credited. He got back to me, said it was a leftover placeholder, but he liked it so much and paid for it.

From the weekend (still with the 16-35L):

I tried my hand at more post production this time rather than my usual 'crop, levels, done'. I've also started getting some bits together so I can get some paid work, to be honest I still don't know why somebody would hire me over many of the other nightlife guys in Leeds but I figure if I don't pull my finger out I'll never get round to it :)
