So tonight we were supposed to shoot Sasha at our home base of Spybar, and I must say I have never been more disappointed with a DJ in my entire nightlife career. With the top 4 or 5 night life photographers in Chicago in attendance the only photographer allowed to take any pictures of Sasha was srika (totally understandable Ruben is incredible), even the house photographer was denied access. I tried taking a crowd shot from about 40 feet away from the DJ booth, when his manager shined a laser pointer in my eye to get me to stop. I feel that if your going to pay a DJ 5 figures to play a venue, he should at least give a brief period to snag some photos. As far as being super anal about photos Sasha puts deadmau5 to shame. Photography aside Sasha threw together a incredibly weak ass set, I feel bad for the people that paid to be in there tonight. Anyway enough ranting and raving, on the other hand across the street at Sound-Bar DJ Chuckie threw down tonight! I cant wait to see him come to back to Chicago again. A bunch of pics are coming soon, and PVD/Oakenfold tomorrow night!
Damn, and I thought they had finally "let up" on their stringent photo rules. Because, it seemed like lots of people were taking photos of him. But he (and his management) have definitely been like this for a long time, I know from shooting at his events before. I had to get clearance from his manager by showing him my work, and even signing release forms. And, after taking the pictures, I had to send them to his mgmt to get approval for release. I did get approved (this was a couple of years ago) and for this show his tour manager asked me to come out and take pics.
This was the shot that got me noticed by them, they contacted me about this in 2008 for an RA article and have since used several of my shots for press / promotional purposes:

sux about your night but I have to say, I saw the first time you tried to take a photo of him, you had your secondary flash like 1 foot from his face. That is definitely a no-no. I don't mean to sound preachy but there is certainly a different level of rapport which must be observed with certain DJ's. And I agree, Sasha is the most finicky one out there. Because most DJ's aren't like this, I think its understandable that you kind of take for granted that "regular" level of accessibility so it really stands out when someone turns your camera away. Sucky feeling, for sure.
in regard to the music, I thought he opened well and enjoyed the first several tracks but then he fizzled, putting on some stuff that put a "WTF?" look on mine and many others faces. lol. I left after an hour of his set (was surprised he went on so early) because I had to be somewhere early in the morning. By contrast I enjoyed Chris Walsh (his opener) set thoroughly, he didn't play any track I didn't like. Very good opener. The best Sasha show I ever saw was the one from the pic above, at House of Blues 2008. But a big reason for that was because he was with Digweed.
