Might be a vague question to ask but...
What does the 67mm ultraviolet sunpak filter REALLY do? lol
just protect it? AND/OR is it good for nightlife?

i shot pics last night with it on last night, made my tones more brown, and MILKY

Hey,
I am taking pictures at a party tonight and i need to know what settings that i should be at. I have no real experience with these types of pictures. It will be a party with a dj and several dj lights, not much lighting other than that. I have a canon rebel xs, the stock 18-55 lens, and a 70-200mm f4/L non is telephoto lens.
Thanks.

Well i bought the ultraviolet sunpak filter, but it seems to make my pictures real MILKY rather than real sharp as usual. Maybe it has to do with the filer perhaps?

UV filters are used to literally filter out UV light.. in some outdoor situations UV light can cause images to be hazy, and that is when they are useful. I guess some clubs use somesort of UV lights and the UV filter could eliminate them and give you different tones.

For protection they are ok to protect against dust, but they can be more harmful to your lens if something with any sort of mass hits it.

Your front element is usually a few inches thick and can take direct hits, whereas a filter is only a few mm thick and can break if say a stone hits it and scratch your element. It is something that has been argued for years and the arguing will never cease.

Also remember, cheap filters will detract from sharpness more than better quality filters. Personally, I'd never use a cheap sunpak filter, I'd stick with known brands like Hoya, B+W, Lee, etc.

This happens all too frequently to us club photogs. Gotta keep it fresh! Try shooting something different like landscapes or learn a new technique. :D

Haha, I shoot a lot of stuff. I mainly shoot sports and motorsports, I also shoot editorial for papers.
I do club stuff because it a consistant flow of cash.. to be honest, I would rather be dealing with the DJs rather than the punters, I'd also like to find a way to shoot concerts.

@default

I'm sure this was brought up before somewhere in the thread on my reading not so long ago,

but from experience UV filters are balls for nightlife, takes away the sharpness and the vibrancy of tones, especially lighting. hence the brown milky shots.

in terms of protection. you can't beat insurance... :P

try out a skylight filter, tends to enhance the colours, and give a bit of warmth, without making it brown

if its any consolation, my opinion she's the #1 dancer in Chicago. but you're right, subject matter can help shots considerably. to make an analogy, it's pretty tough to take a bad picture of the Taj Mahal. I feel similarly shooting this girl, it's pretty hard to take a bad pic of her.

So, last night I tried something new.

The crowd was ****ty and almost none wanted photos.. So I spent a lot of time working on the DJ and dancers.. Wanted to do a highiso no flash thing, which I do a lot in all of my other shooting.. Just not at the club since I only have the f/4 glass.
Went pretty well and I am happy.

But then I got home and was editing at the kitchen table and recording a screenflow of my workflow for some friends that wanted to see how I handle images... and my battery gets to 13%, on the way to the charger it dies on me so I lost the entire screenflow project.
