Having used the 16-35 before, I noticed a HUUUUGE difference in my photos...granted I haven't yet used the 17-50, but the build quality and autofocus on the Canon is undoubtedly better than the Tamron. As to whether or not it's worth it, no one can tell you that. I suggest renting before you make any decisions. Never used the Tamron, or for that manner, any Tamron glass, but I was experimenting over the weekend with my venerable 16-35 and an old 24-85 piece of Canon glass and the differences were like night and day. I would sure hope so comparing a $150 lens to a $1000 lens. My stuff

I used a friend's Lumiquest 80-20 and was not a big fan of it. Oh yea, we had this Avatar themed gimmick going on as well. Canon 40D Gripped/Tokina 11-16mm F2.8/600EX RT/One Minnen Ratta and other goodies.
